I came across a bunch of pages that told me I could turn off some services and speed up my XP laptop. Of course, foolishly, I did that and now, cannot see any of my other computers in the workgroup on the laptop. I have a Windows 7 PC, which I could see from my XP laptop before. Now, though I do see the workgroup on my XP laptop, it is an empty container. On my Windows 7 PC, I don't see the laptop at all under "Network ". Never had a problem until I fiddled with the Services.

Anybody know of a freeware that I could use to restore the services to default? Or, if someone can please tell me what services might possibly contribute to this, I would appreciate it. I sure don't want to re-image it. And, Murphy's Law - only yesterday, I blew away all my Restore points! :(

    Thanks in advance.

Hi musicollector. You really should only mess with tweaking Windows services if you know what you are doing, are comfortable with tweaking windows services or are an experienced windows user. Otherwise I would leave the services alone.

I have no idea what services you disabled so go here, Black Viper’s Windows XP x86 (32-bit) Service Pack 3 Service Configurations and set your windows services back to their default values.

Then reboot the computer and you should be good to go.

These are the services you need for networking with other computers in XP:

    Computer Browser service automatic
    DNS Client automatic
    Network Connections manual
    Network Location Awareness manual
    Server service automatic
    TCP/IP Netbios Helper service automatic

Make the above changes and reboot.

Thank you, Evan and Tony. I appreciate it.

No sweat. :) I have been using computers since 1988 and the days of DOS, make a living in I.T., and am networking multiple PCs and laptops at home. Of course, nobody can know everything there is to know, and as your sig says, I am "learning more about computers everyday ". That's why I come here. LOL.

I do know what most of the services do, and have reset them to either Manual or Automatic. I will follow your suggestions.

Tony, I had actually already gone in and set the six services you mentioned to the states you had indicated and rebooted. No change!
