This is the error message I get when I start up my computer. It gets past the
first options screen (press F12 to boot from network etc), then it asks me
what mode I want to boot in, then any one I click on it loads XP Home for 2
seconds then an error screen comes up (the error code above) it does not
reboot the computer it just leaves the blue screen up and does nothing. I
understand I have to bypass the hard drive to get back into windows to run
chkdsk, but I can’t get pass the blue screen error message. My question is how do I get pass the blue screen error message to to run the chkdsk function?
    Thx

Hi 12sjm56, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

So I assume you have already tried booting into Safe Mode and tried Last Known Good configuration without success?

Since you can't even boot into Windows your only way of running chkdsk is by using a Windows XP CD. Do you have access to one that you can use?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Hi Evan,
First thank you very much for your assistance. Yes I have tried all the reboot methods.
Yes I have a Windows XP disk, but nothing happens when insert the disk. When I use the disk in my other computer it begins the process, so and I tried to download a new start up disk from MS on a seperated computer, but this did not working either.
My system details are as follows: Dell Dimesion 8250 Series, Intel Petium $ Processor, Level 2 Cache, 512KB intergrated, Service tag 2DHRF21

Put the XP CD in drive, restart and tap F12 until a boot menu appears. Select CDROM drive.

Press F2 to enter the Setup utility. When you enter the BIOS setup screen look for an option to change the boot order of the devices. When you find the option change the boot order so the CD drive is the first boot device followed by the harddrive. Take a look at this link for more information, How to change the boot sequence in the BIOS.

    Hi Evan,
Sorry for the delayed response, I had to go to work. In the Boot Sequence I can only enable and disable the devices. I can not realign the sequence. So I just use the CD-Rom device which did not work.
Another question is if I reinstall Windows XP will I lose all the files on my hard drive?

There should be an option to change the boot sequence. Every BIOS has that option. You just have to look again.

If you do a clean install of Windows XP then yes you will lose all your data on the harddrive. But we are going to repair your system which will not erase any of your data.

It seems that it is not reading the cd, I put the cd in another machine and worked fine.
The second DVD drive will not even open.

Open the drive using a paper clip in the small hole. All CD/DVD drives have a tiny hole for manually opening the drawer.

    Hey Tony,
I did get the other drive open. thank you for that tip. Unfortunely it appers that that drive does not work either. I can the cd trying to be read with ablank black screen with a blinking cursor in upper left corner.
I tried all of the 'F#" key suggestions previously mentioned here to no avail. I going to resarch how to replace a cd drive and see if I can do that and then reattempt the suggestions made here.
I want to thank you and Evan for your time, patience and expertise in helping me with this problem. I have learned so much about my computer from you guys in the very short time of this post. If you have any more suggest please let me know.
    Thanks again
    Stephen

No Problem. The fact that the CD works in another computer but not in the computer that is having issues shows that the CD drive has most likely failed as you mentioned.

You can probably find a new CD drive for about $30.00. Since the computer is running Windows XP it probably is using an IDE CD drive.

    Ok Guys,
I had the drive changed and booted up from the cd and ran chdks /r and everything went fine. Turn it off and came back a little later turn it on, everything statred coming up on my desktop and then the start status bar did not appear. I have to turn the machine off through the windows task manager. I was not seeing my wireless card or any other icons os the start button.
I'm thinking I have to go back and do the recovery again?
Well at least i'm making progress.
    Thx

    Now try Safe Mode.
If no joy, boot with CD > Repair > run: chkdsk /r
    When complete, type: exit
and then boot to Safe Mode.

If you are doing a repair install of Windows you shouldn't have to delete or configure any partitions. Windows should find the previous installation automatically and start the repair process.

If you remove the partition and create a new one then you will be doing a clean install of Windows which will remove all data from the harddrive.

    Hey Evan,
Thx for that response. The good news is that I ran chkdks /r and that went through 5 different verification stages. So I am very thankful to you and TonyT for getting me out of that dreaded blue screen warning.
Now althought windows in up and running is not total fine.
First I have no Network Connections of any kind. I have a Netgrear W624v4 wireless router. And I've download the latest drivers on disk, but that didn't work.
I've restarted, rebooted and reset the router and the cable modem still no avail.
When I go to Control Panel > Network Connections nothing appears in the window.
Secondly: No WiFi icons appear on the task bar and no information any kind about available wireless connections appear anywhere. I used to get a list of different wireless networks in my area.
Hope you can help when get the time.
I will wait patienetly for your response.
    Thx
    Stephen

Lets see if those network adapters have been disabled since you can't even view your network adapters in Windows.

Click Start< Right click My Computer and click Properties. Click the Hardware Tab and then click Device Manager. Do you see any devices with a red X or a yellow ! next to them?
