Hi rocknroller. We need some more information. Does the computer reboot when you reach the logon screen or does it reboot when you attempt to load your user profile?

Have you tried pressing F8 on startup and selecting Safe Mode to see if the computer reboots there?

If the computer reboots in Safe Mode then you could have a hardware problem.

If that is the case then your computer could be giving you a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) but is rebooting itself so you don't see it. In order to see the blue screen you need to disable the auotimatic reboot on system failure option. To do this press F8 on startup and select the option that says Disable Reboot on System Failure.

Let me know if you get a BSOD and what the error message might be which should help to narrow down the source of the problem.

Hi Evan, The computer keeps rebooting to the regular startup (dos) screen and then goes to a dos screen that offers safe mode; safe mode w/networking;normal, and last known good configuration. However, none of these will hold as it goes right past all of these choices even if I wait until the timer at the bottom of the screen (25-30 seconds) runs out. Holding down the F8 key has no effect at all, and won't boot into safe mode. However, it does run the safe mode dos screens but won't stop there and continues on to reboot itsself repeatedly. I'm wondering if it has picked up some sort of virus and the only thing I can think to do is to try to boot from a xp cd rom and perform a install & repair from the cd. What do you think and thanks.....rocknroller...

You probably have some corrupt system files that are preventing Windows XP from booting up normally.

At this point your only option is to boot from a Windows XP CD and repair your system. Do you have access to a Windows XP CD?

I've just moved after 20 years in the same location so there's one here somewhere. Maybe I can find it. I believe you are right on target about the simplest way to repair it.

    I should do a repair/re-install right?

    Thanks.....rocknroller...

Hold off on doing a repair install. There are a few commands that you can run using the recovery console which should hopefully resolve your problem. If you can't get your Windows XP installation repaired using the recovery console then you will have to do a repair install.

Once you find a Windows XP CD let me know and I will guide you through the process of what you need to do.

Hi Rocknroller. i have just had the same problem on my desktop with XP Pro , it would start to open and then go to the screen with "Safe Mode etc choices on it. but none would work it would just go back to the XP green running bar and run that and then to the screen with the choices, Safe Mode , Last known good configeration etc ,
It turned out to be my HDD, which was 6-7 years old ,
They fitted a new 500gig HDD and cloned all my data over , never lost a thing.
    May be your problem?.
Mine happened over night , I was using it at 8.30pm all Ok.
Switched on 2.00pm next day and the problem was there, we tried the ram test etc and all differrent ways to see if it would fire up but no luck.
    maybe worth a check.
    Cheers Des.

You need to give us the details of the system. Would it be a MS Windows disk or an OEM disk? Has laptop or desktop computer been mentioned?

Some OEM disks don't have Recovery Console or a repair option.

    [Aside: Hello Des]

    rebooting problem resolved!

Many thanks for all the support....I finally found the win xp pro cd and got the os up and running.....now I cannot access the internet because the original recovery files for this computer are not available. The unit in question is a Gateway E4100 which I updated with win xp pro for the operating system. Now, I am missing the files to activate the ethernet controller and have tried Driver Guide and all sources I know to no avail. Does anyone know of a site that would have these files or even a copy of the needed file. I have contacted Gateway and apparently the model is too old and they no longer offer any support or information about obtaining these files....

Anyone able to help or shed some light on a solution to this problem?

Also....another issue that I cannot understand. Many of these sites offer a driver scan and update program but they fail to explain how to access the site with their scanning program. It seems to me that unless you can access the internet, all of these programs are a waste of time because of the inability to connect to the net which would allow their program to resolve the issue....kind of like putting the cart before the horse don't you think...or am I missing some way to work around this?

Many thanks to all of you for the wonderful support and assistance that this site provides.....rocknroller...
