For more than 2 weeks I have been trying to install windows security update KB2564958 and i will fail to install giving error code 0x80246007. I looked up this error code online and it means "NOT DOWNLOADED" but I am sure it was downloaded because I went directly to microsoft.com and looked up the stand alone of this update and downloaded it and my download manager showed the progress bar downloading 744 KB which I saved to desktop but when I tried to onstall it the setup was interrupted at the beginning saying "Setup was cancelledâ€.

I have scanned my pc with Spybot, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Norton Security suite and they found no viruses or troyans at all (note that I don’t have any antispyware actively monitoring on task-bar I use all of them manually to scan so there is no conflicts).

I ran Chkdsk and found no errors. I ran Registry First Aid and clea-ned the registry to no avail, this up-date will not install. There must be some bug or this update was corrupted since they offered it. I have tried several options that I found online and did not solve the issue. My Norton protection and all other softwares never interfered with Microsoft Updates.

I contacted Microsoft support and after they gave me a list of several options to solve the problem that I followed to the letter to no avail they asked me to use (and pay) phone support and I replied to them that Microsoft offers FREE complete support for problems related to Windows security updates and I refuse to pay for that support. That was a week ago and they have not responded at all they left me on my own.

I don’t know if some of you have had problems trying to install this update but if you found a solution please share it with us.

First thing you should do is to fill out your system details. Go to User CP and when done, don't forget to save it.
What possesed you to use a reg. cleaner? These can cause more harm than good and make a boat anchor out of a PC.
Have you just tried installing it without saving it to your desktop?

Please don't post on multiple forums, fair enough if you have no assistance here you could try elsewhere but any advice you get from MajorGeeks for example would be difficult for us to track...

Thanks for your fast response. Let me explain something, I use a registry cleaner once a week along with Clean (all temps etc with Your Uninstaller and Tuneup Utilities) and Defrag (Diskeeper 2011) and clean the hard disk, etc and then I do a full system backup every week with Acronis True Image saved to an external Hard Drive and these backups have saved me many times when the pc will not boot and other system errors.

The pros and cons regarding the use of registry cleaners is at least debatable some experts say it is good and others say it is of no benefit and others that it will be on detriment of your pc. At least, for me, I have not had any problems or slowness on my PC due to it and I also have checked my entire system on PCPitstop Overdrive full test and everything is up to date and working fine. I also have SpywareBlaster and use CCleaner, Temp Cleaner, expired cookies cleaner, etc with no problems.

I tried to install this update from Microsoft Updates and failed, I tried also from the updates ICON (downloaded from MU) and also failed then I downloaded the standalone update to my desktop and the setup was cancelled at about 25% on the progress bar (I haven't tried to install it directly from internet without saving it first to desktop, I am used to save it first to desktop so I can run Norton on it to see if it is free of spyware or viruses before installing anything.

I have not found any option to upload screenshots of the error messages mentioned on my starter and if you ned my system information I can save it to my desktop but then you have to tell me how to upload the doc here because I dont see any options to upload anything.

Sorry about me posting the same issue on other forums but because I am desperate to find a solution but I am also a responsible person and whatever advise or solutions I get on any forum I will undoubtedly share it with the other forums and if I find a solution I will share it also and let everybody know i found the solution and close thge thread. I am subscribed to 6 or 7 forums but I only posted this issue on Mayor Geeks and TechSupportGuy and they are the only ones

If Norton doesn't catch it when it is downloading, you need to get rid of Norton. Saving it to you desktop and then scanning it AGAIN is to me a pure waste of time. That is just my opinion.

I did not say that Norton can not scan on the fly any download I said simply that I am used to first download to desktop and then install (mostly because I want to choose myself the partition where to install in my case partition D where I have all the software and not to be directly installed on partition C system)but this is of no importance and not related to the issue.

I went to user cp and went o the thread display options where I am presented with a lot of boxes to fill one by one regarding my system specs ad that's time consuming I just prefer to upload or attach the sysinfo log saved to my desktop using SIW if you show me hiow to do it to be posted here

    As per MS:

So that's the number you have to call...

Anyway, see this Microsoft article: When you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive a "0x80246007" error code

Sorry for the delay in posting I have been very busy. Thanks Ari and all of you for these suggestions but I already tried it and downloaded the .bat repair file and did not solve anything. Also I already mentioned that I tried to update manually downloading the file and then when I clicked on it on my desktop the setup window came up and I click "install" and it started the process but 2 or 3 seconds after it started it abruptly closed with a message saying "setup was cancelled ".

Now I will try to call support but the first time i contacted suppoprt via microsoft website
(don't remember if it was same number) the tech contacted me by email with a series of options (including the ones you suggested) which I followed to no avail and when I told the tech these didn't work he replied to me that it would be better for me to contact support by phone which was not free depending on my PC warranty (as if my pc or system was at fault!) or that i could continue with emails.

I responded that I will not pay for support because microsoft always has stated that concerning any windows security updates the support is free regardless of any warranties of your pc and that I suspect that this particular update has some bug or is corrupted from the very release. I checked my PC with every antivirus and several first rate antimalwares ran checkdisk (no errors were found) and my pc is free of viruses malware and errors and all the other updates installed without problems only this one keeps failing to install.

After I sent them that email a week ago they have not responded me so I went to microsoft website and opened a new ticket for exactly the same issue but with a diferent name and email address and I received email saying my ticket was recieved and a tech will contact me within 48 hours. It has been 4 days and still have not gotten response from any tech and I even send a new email complaining about not receiving the support and got no response at all from microsoft.

I hope you can now see the issue with posting on multiple MB's, I understand that your previous attempts were from MS themselves but in effect you've told us you've tried loads of things but haven't told us exactly what you've tried. You are going to get a lot of suggetions that repeat what you have already done.

I'd follow Arie's advice and call MS direct but please keep us informed.

I called the Microsoft support at the number provided by Ari and could speak with a tech who opened a remote session yesterday and took charge of my PC and he tried multiple options including registry, reinstalling WUP we spent 2.5 hours trying to install that update from hell and still wouldn't install.

At the end he gave me a case number and he ordered a Windows XP Professional SP3 installer CD for free so I can do a System File Checker or use the windows console to repair any damaged windows file or to do a non destructive repair using the CD.

Every single update that I downloaded and isntalled (like 12 since October 1)
were installed without a hitch except for this one mother....

My system seems to be OK it is working fine but when I receive the Windows CD I will run the sfc to see what happens.

I am attaching a screenhot of my update history where you can clearly see this update failed to install but with a difference: at the beginning 2 weeks ago when it failed to minstall the history showed "FAILED" with error code
0x80246007 (means NOT DOWNLOADED but I also tried to install directly from the microsoft website and even tried to run it without downloading it to no avail) BUT now it does not show "failed" anymore and NO error code, it just says "CANCELLED ".
