    Xp service pack 2, on hp computer, a545c with athalon chip. This all started when I updated to service pack 3, I started getting blue screens. Called Microsoft, paid $60, we tried to remove sp3 with every step possible, and it wouldn't remove, even through recovery console.

    No, they had me do a repair install, the one through windows setup. When it gets to "installing devices" during the repair, it stops at 36 min remaining. Everytime! I looked at my setupapi.log and it doesn't show any particular inf that it's getting hung up on. The last line it infcache.1.

    It's driving me nuts and I just want to boot back to my desktop. Can anyone help. Would love to chat with someone, or try to fix this asap.

    This can be quite a headache I know, I have been there. We don't have your System Details, but what you should try, if you not already have, is insert the lowest amount of Ram possible, try with 256MB even if you have to borrow a module, I would not go over 500MB. What version of XP CD are you using is it with SP2 or SP1. Remove all other items, just the C drive and video card if you have one.
    Once you get past the (most of the time 34 min) hang and finish the repair I would suggest to make a slipstreamed XP SP3 disk and install SP3 that way since you had problems the other way. It will take extra time but I think it will be a better chance to succeed.
    On the other hand you can make a XP SP3 slipstramed CD and try to do your repair with that also using the minimum amount of ram.

    Once you have successfully finished your repair and Windows boots up it will tell you that you are low on Memory, you need than to up your ram to install all the MS Updates probably more than 100 which will be time consuming but necessary.

    I have 1 gig of ram, I didn't try just 512mb, which I could.

    The xp cd I have in sp2.

    I have sp3 on cd as well. Microsoft sent me xp/sp2 and a separate sp3 cd. How could doing this slipstreamed thing help from me getting stuck at 36 min installing devices? I deleted the inf (iis.inf) in the setupapi that was causing an error, but it still dies out and doesn't say what's causing the issue. The other logs say stuff about system security errors.

    Please post the last 15 lines of the Pnplog.txt, Setupapi.log, Setupact.log and Setuperr.log files.

    Thanks. I've tried all of that from what you pasted. I don't have a pnplog.txt from some reason?

    Here are the others with the last few lines.

    Again, I did rename the iis.inf in the inf folder and that removed the error in the setupapi.log but not the other logs it seems.

    Try this: open Windows Explorer and go to \Windows\Inf. Locate the sysoc.inf file & double click it. Scroll down to:

    [Components]

    K=KOC.dll,KOCSetupProc,KOC.inf,HIDE,7
    NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
    WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
    Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
    Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
    NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
    iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
    dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7

    Change the bold line to:
    ; iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7

    Save the file and re-run your repair.

    No need for slipstreamed CD if like you say, you have the correct SP2 and SP3 CD's.

    My line in that file says this exactly now:

    iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,hide,7

    it has "hide" in that line. So to be sure, you want me just to just add a "; " in front of it? like this?

    ; iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,hide,7

    Ok, did it, and same thing. Freezes at 36 min when "installing devices" anything else to try? I can put the harddrive in another machine as a slave if someone wants to remote connect and check any folders out or anything else?

    I have one other idea to try:

    • Once the repair stops, remove the CD from the drive and reboot
    • Don't enter the CD when the installation asks for it, instead open a DOS prompt (Shift + F10)
    • Go to the folder C:\windows\inf (type cd C:\windows\inf and press [Enter])
    • Delete the INFCACHE.1 file (type Del INFCACHE.1 and press [Enter])
    • Insert the XP installation CD and Continue the installation

    No other ideas. That is, if you tried all that is mentioned in the link provided by SpywareDr in his first post, specifically:

    Darn, well, I've done it all I think. If anyone has any last ditch things, let me know.
