    Hi ashley19. Welcome to windowsbbs.

What happened right before this message? Did you install/remove any program ? Any virus ?

You could download pshed.dll from here & copy it in C:\Windows\System32 folder or run sfc /scannow as Administrator to try & repair it.

I would never install a system file from an unknown source!

If you can't start Vista, boot of your Vista DVD, and on the Install Now screen choose Repair your computer.

If you are prompted to run System Restore, you could try and see if you have a restore point available before the problem started, try the restore & see if that fixes it.

If not, press Cancel at the prompt to run System Restore & you'll get to the Advanced Tools. Choose Command Prompt, and run sfc /scannow from there.

    I totally agree with Arie.
Normally, Vista should have some replacement files already there.
Let's see, if we can find it.

    Using working computer...

Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

    • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
    • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
    • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
    • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
    • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
    • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
    • OTL should now start.
    • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

      /md5start
      PSHED.DLL
      /md5stop

    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

    You won't mess up anything.
You just need to create the above CD to use it on bad computer.

I get the same error message on the screen, "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the case. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and estart your computer.
    2. Choose language settings, and then click NEXT.
    3. Click REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER.
    File: PSHED.dll
Info: Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt. "

Apparently, you're not booting from the CD.
Check "boot order" in BIOS (see my previous instructions how to do it, if you don't know).

    Boot order is :

    Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive
    USB Floppy
USB Diskette on key/USB Hard Disk
    Network Adapter

I recommend you remove the email address to avoid SPAM, particularly as it's not yours. You'll not get any faster replies anyway and this board is set up to benefit the community not just yourself (ie others may learn from the answers you receive)

Never post your email in public, or you'll be facing a lot of spam.
Please, edit your post and remove email address.

    "Boot order" looks fine.
Try to boot your dad's computer with created CD to see, if it'll boot there.
    Once again...you won't break anything :)
