This is my second post, guess the website ate my first one, had to sign on again.
Someone told me I needed a wireless adapter inorder to have my fax/copier/printer wireless.
I installed a Linsky wireless g usb adapter and apparently I checked something that I shouldn't have. My network sharing center is showing a little yellow triangle with a exclamation point from my pc to an unidentified network and then a big red X to the internet. Does this make any sense?
I obviously don't have a clue what I am doing and don't know what I checked that messed this up. I did do a system restore but that didn't fix my problem. If I put my cursor on the lower right (tool bar) I get currently connected to "unidentified network" access limited connectivity. There is no way I can access the internet like this. Please help!

I spoke with my isp tech and he said the NICard is not reading the ethernet cable. The assigned isp is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx which is not right. Any suggestions for this?

    Try this short guide.

    http://www.ehow.com/how_6853436_set-via-usb-wi_fi-router.html

If that does not work follow this instruction so we can see the details.

Hi markmadras. Thanks for your reply to my post. I am much confused, I don't think there is anyway for me to copy and paste on my pc, it is not connected to the internet. I did copy the command but got nothing when I hit enter. I placed it right after the flashing _on the black screen.
Oops, I found it, had to go into my computer, then c drive. Now, how do I get it form my vista pc to my xp? Is it possible since I can't send anything from the vista pc?

I decided to just try to type the info:

Configuration for interface "Local Area Connection "
    DHCP enabled yes
    IP address: 169.254.220.122
    Subnet Prefix: 169.254.0.0/16 (mask 255.255.0.0)
    Interface Metric: 20
DNS servers configured through DHCP: None
Register with which suffix: Primary only
WINS servers configured through DHCP: None
This is the first part. This is what your wanting correct?

Open the report in Notepad and save it. Then burn the file to a disc and transfer it to the other PC. Open the file and then copy it into your next post.

Did you first run through the guide in the link I gave?

OMG. You actually think I know what I'm doing. It says to drag files to this folder to add them to the disc. There aren't but about 16 lines, perhaps I could just type it in the post. However, this may take a while.

Oops again. I glanced at it then wrote you back. I would like to be able to use my NIC but it looks like I may have to use the USB, right?

If you save the report in Notepad with a name you can remember then you just need to burn that single file to the disc. To save the report, right click on the report file, select Open With, select Notepad, in Notepad click on File and then Save As, enter a name and then click Save.

And again I ask: Did you first run through the guide in the link I gave?

And one more important question, did you install the driver for the USB adapter?

I first installed the software as it said to, then inserted the usb and all went well. It said it was correct. But at the very end there was a window that had me click on something, apparently I selected the wrong something and then I had a mess, Could not connect to the internet. I guess when I clicked I must have changed some setting, don't know. The isp tech said the NIcard is not reading the ethernet cable. Then he said something about perhaps something was damaged.
Bottom line, I did a system restore to get the USB stuff off the pc thinking it would correct everything but it didn't. So, I do not have the USB installed now. I did answer your post in my other post.
I think that this is just too much for me and perhaps I should just quit trying........Be kind, I'm someones grandmother. LOL

Our posts have now crossed over so lets start again from here.

So, your USB device is now uninstalled but you still have no connection using the Ethernet cable?

Mark. I think I did answer in #7 post. At present I do not have the USB adapter installed. I did read the link you sent me and it reads similar to the guide I got with the USB but I did not see anywhere in the guide about start>connect to>Wireless.
Oh, I did plug the ethernet cable back in earlier to see what would happen but it was the same so it is still plugged in.

Hi. Just wanted to tell you that I did reinstall the USB adapter and can get online. I suppose I should have done that at first ( because I was really stressed about his issue)but this is not really how I wanted to connect. If you can think of some way for me to be able to use my ethernet to connect to the internet, I would appreciate your input.
Thank you so much again. Hope you have more answers for me.

Tell me if I have got these two facts correct.

Your intention was to use the wireless USB adapter to communicate with your printer/fax and to continue using the cable connection for the internet.

    And:

Your first post suggests that your cable connection had failed, did this happen before you installed the USB wireless device?

Correct, I only wanted to set the printer, etc. up as wireless. It took up so much space and wanted to put it in the other room or at least out of the way.

This is a tough question to answer. I think it went out after I installed the USB. This gets complicated.........I have digital phone service and was moving a phone from my bedroom, hooked it up in my computer room, it wouldn't work, then hooked it back up in the bedroom, it wouldn't work, no phones and neither pc could get service, called isp tech, they couldn't fix it so they were going to send someone out, but wasn't sure when. We kept plugging and unplugging phones and rearranged the wiring on the outlet in pc room, finally got the phone to work and the red light to go out on the modem/router. All phones working at this point and my XP desktop is working, but no connection for the Vista. I think it had to be the USB adapter since the XP has connection to the internet.
Now, a short time ago I turned on the pc's and the Vista has not connection, it has wireless connections available but apparently I didn't set something properly and will have to open up the connect to a network everytime I start the pc.
    Does my problem ever end?

Open Network and Sharing Center. Select Manage wireless networks.
Right-click on the wireless connection and select Properties. Make sure
"Connect automatically when this network is in range" in Connection is
    checked.

Hi. Hope you are well rested today. I did check on "Connect Automatically" when I clicked on the icon in the taskbar and the window opened. Thank you.
I am happy that I can get up and running on the internet but wonder if I have a hardware or software problem with the NIC card?

Yes, thank you, plenty of sleep last night.

As far as I know you cannot use both, the NIC card will be disabled as you are using the wireless to connect to the internet. The other option is to use the NIC card for the internet and then you have to change the setup of the wireless to run Ad-Hoc to communicate with the printer.

To check your NIC card go into Device Manager, click on the + next to Network Adapters, right click on the device and then click on properties. It should say under the General tab if the device is working properly.

Hi. Glad you got plenty of sleep.
It does show that it is working properly. Why does it show location: PCI bus 0,device 10, function 0?
When I had the adapter uninstalled, for some reason the ISP tech said that the NIC card was not reading the ethernet cable. (I cannot use the NIC card.) I'm beginning to wonder what I've done to this pc because I keep getting [] around some of the letters, especially when I capitalize. Gee!
