I apolagize for any mixup between using "Networking or Vista" section, was not sure where to post. My nephew has a fairly new HP laptop, medium price range so not a cheapy. I don't think he has been able to go online (wireless) in their house since he bought it. My sis called either Comcast or Microsoft & was told that Vista's SP1 would fix the laptop to get online. Now my niece (same house) gets on her MAC no trouble. I got on with my new Laptop (Win 7) in their home but I have spent hours trying everything to get on-line but can't do it..Do u think there is a fix in Vista SP 1 to get online????? Can't get on-line so I was thinking of downloading SP 1 to a DVD disc and load it that way
    Thanks for any ideas--

It would be better to get the wireless card in the PC to work and then download the SP1 directly onto the computer. Have you tried getting a connection using an ethernet cable directly to the modem.

Try this guide and see if it helps.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-network-connection-problems

Can you tell me the model name and number of the laptop.

    As I posted SP1 is a prerequesite for SP2, so SP1 followed by SP2 :)

Now that you are back on line and after installing the SP1 and then SP2 you can see if the wireless system works. If not, I would suggest uninstalling the driver and then downloading a new driver and reinstalling it. The computers name and model number should be on a label somewhere, usually underneath. Look it up on the 'HP support' site and you should find all the drivers for the PC. The wireless driver will probably be listed under Network. Check the name of the wireless card in 'Device Manager' and you should find it in the drivers list.

Let us know how it goes.

    Welcome back.

OK, thanks for the PC details but what has happened since your previous post. Have you installed the Service packs, did you find the driver, you need to give us an update.

Hi markmadras, thanks so much for taking the effort to find and follow me with this Post. Its been hard because I only go to my nephews house every 2 weeks. I'm going to his house for Thanksgiving so hopefully I get this all fixed Thursday. I can't wait to get there and use your directions. He bought this PC new almost a year ago and has never been online with it  I am determined to get that laptop fixed. I promise to Post back as soon as I have news tomorrow. Thank you very much Mark for all the good info you just gave me. Wishing a Happy & safe Thanksgiving to you and yours!!

    ~Paul :D

If you open HP Advisor then click on P C Dashboard your serial number and product number are listed on the bottom.

The Service Packs must have fixed the problem because I was able to finally get on-line. See it was a catch 22, if he could have got on-line he would have had the Service Packs loaded and I guess they would have kept the Laptop working right. Thank you everyone for all your wonderful help.
