Windows Vista Installed new hard drive, getting no bootable device error

Hi. Here's what I have. Compac Presario CQ60-220US that several days ago received blue screen of death as I was cruising internet. Installed no new hardware, though I had used a new flash drive to remove pictures from computer to storage and while that had worked, I did not remove flash drive when I was finished. Once I received blue screen "stop error" I immediately tried the reboot with last known good configuration. Received stop error again. Over the next couple of days, I continued to try the boot from CD, no luck, I tried the F11 recovery tool, no luck. I went to Windows and downloaded the Vista Recovery disc, no luck. I went to Norton and downloaded the Norton Recovery disc, no luck. After each attempt, I continued to receive the blue screen stop error. After much research on the internet I decided I was getting no where so determined that my hard drive was fried. Removed existing drive from laptop and ordered same Serial Ata Disc Drive as replacement, however 500 GB instead of 250 GB. Installed this morning. I am now receiving the "no bootable device found - please insert disk."

Looking at BIOS, time and date are correct. I've also removed and re-seated the new hard disc. I've run the Primary Hard Disk Self Test, Quick Test passed. So far Full test is executing just fine.

Please help me if you can. I am at a complete loss of what to do next. My desktop is slower than slow and my brain burns can only tolerate so much brain-hermorage during the time it takes to load one page, much less figure this out on my own. I think I've reached my end!

You need to install an OS on the hard disk.

Boot from Vista Recovery Cd & follow the prompts.

I try to use my back up disks which contain all programs I had on my computer, but they aren't recognized. Where do I get the Vista OS disc to re-load if it came preloaded on my laptop? I have the Vista Recovery CD but the computer is not recognizing it to boot from.

 

Have you read in the User Guide/manual for any special instructions for booting to the disks?

How did you burn the Vista recovery disc? This has to be burned as an ISO is that what you did.

Have you set the boot order in the bios for the CD drive to be first. This might not be essential on your system but it may help.

Even if your hard drive was fried you should be able to boot from the Vista recovery disc unless there is another problem.

When you say that the computer is not recognising the recovery or back up discs what error message do you get on screen.

Your computers memory could be a suspect, try removing and reseating the memory stick/s. You should be able to download a memory test CD from the manufacturers site.

The initial fault that caused the BSOD may have been a virus/malware, this might have got transfered to your flash drive so make sure you scan it before using it again.

 

Thank you Mark and Matt for your suggestions. From Marks recommendations, I discovered I may not have burned my recovery discs correctly, so used Matt's link and ordered the HP Recovery CDs. I received them today. Loaded them and they worked! Awesome ... thank you ... until I hit "finish" and it booted and I once again received the STOP error. So, needless to say, I must have a virus/malware issue. I had run the memory tests prior to reloading my OS, as Mark suggested and all memory tests passed with no issues.

Can you please describe to me the proper way, or send me in the proper direction, to obtain the malware software I need to download and BURN correctly, so I may once again try to clean my computer and reload my OS. My backup is on Norton and my backup discs for software reloading are from a year ago, neither of which I have even attempted or gotten close to using yet.

Feel as if my computer intelligence is flowing down the drain at this point, so please "dumb" down your explanations for me if you feel you can. Thank you so much!!

Thanks, Mark. I'll head there next, then. I'll also research how to properly burn an ISO disc. I have Roxio(?) on my desktop ... maybe that will help me do a proper burn.

I've been using norton for years and never had any intrusions. But using norton is my personal preference.

That sounds good Gabrie, but if there is a BIOS upgrade that you install (flash) under Windows and not from a boot CD, if Windows is unstable the flash might fail and the computer will no longer work.

I suggest to consider carefully when running a BIOS upgrade. If Windows is unstable, check for a method that does not run under Windows, like making a boot CD.
