I purchased a laptop on the weekend at a Garage/Yard sale, swapped out all the bits needed to update my wifes laptop to the new laptop (IBM R40 > IBM T41) everything worked fine, no re-install required, the TV card was the only thing needing please insert cdXXXXXXX for info required.

But I would like to upgrade her O/S from XP to Vista,
I have 2 desktops both have Vista on them, 1 Home the other Enterprise
One of them I want to sell, downgraded to XP (it has Vista Home on it & the COA is still on the CD/DVD case)
I want to wipe the Desktop!! Then re-install XP on it (it still has the XP COA on it) so I can transfer the Vista Home O/S & licence to her new laptop

How do I go about doing this & have it authenticated as I would assume it will say it is already done on another computer!?

    regards Jac

I have done this. All you have to do is call Microsoft (the number is on the validation page) and they will take care of it.

I've read it twice and do not have a clue what jacrabbit is wanting to do.

It looks like 12 differnet computers and all are getting a different OS...Some OS's will move to other pc's as upgrades and some as downgrades:eek::p:eek:

    Am I close?

Is there a short version to the question?

Are any of the machines store bought like Dell? If so - a Dell OS can ONLY be used on a Dell pc.

Thanks Bill I will do that.

Steve I know it sounds confusing, thankfully I'm not downgrading the other 6 in the shed as well

    Cheers Jac

Save them, the wife thinks I want to keep them, her boss keeps giving me his hand-me-downs, so does the family, I just need some time to find out if the local Seniors club would be interested as they are all good but old machines (PI & PII).

    Have a good Easter

There's a question: ARE P1 and PII units still really good for anything? I've a couple of old units sitting in my office that I have no idea what to do with, other than giving them to the Sallies or Good Will... If they'd be useful somewhere else, I'd appreciate knowing of it.

I might try one of the local youth groups but I'll wipe the hard drives 1st, a few have the original COA on them still (ME & XP) so I may re-install the O/S the rest I suppose they will have to find O/S's for themselves

Oi! I LUVVED 3.1! It were summat as I could flog on until it did as I told it.... 95 were a bit more obstreperous and 98SE was the best. I could give that one "Sodomy and The Lash" until it cried for mercy!

The later ones (I skipped ME & 2000Ktotally) are a bit more "challenging ", but I've got XP-Pro in a corner (even tho it still scores a claw mark or two... [bleedin' tigres!] on me) but Vista and 7 are so far beyond me ken as to be bluidy magik, then.
