Vista and CD/DVD combo formatting?

I understand formatting a blank cd/dvd, no problem.
But when i insert a cd or dvd with data, music, jpgs, etc
vista still shows the formatting window for a blank cd/dvd.

I put in a music (CDA format) cd i purchased from a music
store - vista wants to format it.
I put in a cd with nothing but jpgs on it - vista wants to
format it.
Taking both cd's to another system and they read just fine.

In both cases vista says it a blank cd.....

Suggestions?

thanks,
savagcl

It looks like your optical drive has some problems.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

My System

broni, thanks for the feedback.

I ran the cdgone and uninstalled the driver then rebooted,
it did reinstall the driver during bootup. No effect on the problem that i can see.

Control Panel>Device Manager shows:
DVD/CD-ROM drives
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7203S

IDE ATA/Atapi controllers shows:
Intel(R) ICH9 SATA AHCI Controller

Let me restate the problem -
When i put a data, music or pictures cd or DVD into the
drive, windows sees it as a blank cd and wants to reformat
it.

When i click on My Computer > DVD RW Drive (O: )
A window opens up titled ''Burn a Disc" (in the windows header).
The body of this window shows:

Prepare this blank disc

Disc title: Sep 06 2009

Show formatting options Next Cancel

thanks,
savagcl

when the CD/DVD unit didn't show up under "My Computer"

Thanks, PeteC
