I run Vista SP2 on my laptop and have the latest virus checking software and Microsoft updates running. When I go to my Pictures folder and select a sub folder, and I have attempted to "Customise this Folder" in all possible ways including "View as Pictures or Video ". I go to the views tab on the folder I have selected and try to view the .jpg files as one of the Icon sizes. I cannot get the pictures to appear as a Small, Medium, Large or Very large icons. I cannot only get Details, List or Tiles layout of the files.

I get this problem when selecting photos images in any folder, even those in the desktop that contain pictures.

If I use Windows photo gallery then the icons will appear as normal.

I cannot find any reference to help me in past posts, but am certain the someone will be able to help me solve this problem. I shall be very grateful.

As I understand it, you want a thumbnail version of the picture itself displayed as the files's icon. You should get that by right clicking inside the folder and in the menu that opens, go to View. In the View menu that opens, click on Tiles. Does that not work?

    Dear Miz,
Thank you for your trouble in attempting to find the solution to my problem. Regretably it is not quite so simple. As you suggested I have already attempted to change the display in the pictures folder by selecting Tiles, small, medium, large or extra large Icons. Each time on any of the photo folders I click on, I get the same image on the screen. It is not the pictures that were taken by my camera, but is a fixed icon. I can try to describe it as follows. It is a landscape showing sea in the foreground, mountains beyond the coast in the middle ground and blue sky with white clouds above.
Two events that might be relevant are as follows. About the time that the problem suddenly occured were:

    1. The laptop suffered a total failure. I suspect this may have been due to the mains power failing for some reason and the then the battery running down completely.

    2. Also around this time I tweaked the computer using TeakNow Power Pack 2009. I am sure that I did nothing detrimental but it is possible. I tried to use the program's restore facility to undo changes but on that date there was nothing recorded.

I hope this provides a bit more information to help analyse the problem.

Go to Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab. Under "Files and Folders," make sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not checked. Click OK to save any changes.

    See if that helps.

    Dear Miz,
I hope you saw my last quick reply to your posting. Since I wrote that I had one more attempt to fix the problem and it worked. I can now get pictures showing in any of my Tiles, and small to extra large icons.
What I did was to go to Folder options and I said revert to Default settings. As soon as I did that, all was well.

I have just seen your last post and I suppose setting the defaults achieved what you said I should do. I am not sure what I did to make it go wrong, but I will avoid changing the options in any way again. Thank you once again for your time to look into my problem. I have another one which I will post into a new thread soon.

Vista file assoc, search and folder functions failed

Vista "file association" capibility is shot. In addition, the Control panel-while showing-will not allow me to access it parts. Finally, three days ago, "Search" disappeared from my start panel. My guess is these problems are related but way over my head to solve. While this has occured over a few weeks, I have a major problem and need any help I can get.
