I have a client with a 3 workstation wireless network (Router is a Netgear WNR834B) - two desktops and one laptop. The issue is that on all three different updates (those of Windows Vista (Service pack 2, Office, etc.) and other programs (Garmin, iTunes, etc.) are failing when run. They appear to successfully download but then an error message code is displayed of either:

    80240022, or
    80200053

I also have seen another error message of unable to confirm a signature validation after a failed download (during (iTunes).

One computer is running Noton 360 and the other two McAfee security or Trend Micro Security. I have checked the router and I do not see anything there that could be the cause. I have also tried to disabled the security temporaily and still no luck. I have research various forums including Microsoft's and the furthest I get is that even Microsoft's experts tend to leave users hanging after offering a few possible resolutions.

I have installed a new Windows Update Agent, run CHKDSK /R and validated Windows Defender which have been some suggestions as to what to try.

The ISP is Comcast. I am thinking of the possibility that it could be related to the Comcast modem?

If anyone has expereinced anything similar and would be so kind to pass any suggestions along, I would be extremely grateful.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

80240022 - All updates failed for this operation
    80200053 - BG_E_VALIDATION_FAILED
The application requested data from a web site, but the response was
invalid. Using Event Viewer, check the log 'Application Logs \ Microsoft
    \ Windows \ Bits-client \ Operational' for more details.

Uninstall the security app on one of the systems (using the manufacturer's removal tool - not just the uninstaller) and try it again. If it doesn't work, then reinstall the app immediately so you don't get infected.

    Hi Arie,

Thanks for the follow-up. I had in fact gone out to the customers yesterday afternoon and they have already sent me an email stating everything is fine. The only thing I can figure was a corrupted network config??? given that I had reset the router back to factory defaults. Hopefully that has done the job for good.
