No sound on start up or internet explorer with Vista

I have Windows Vista and lost my sound on start up and program sounds and internet explorer for about 2 weeks now.. The sound works perfectly in media programs. I have done a system restore but could not go back far enough..I have checked my sound settings and speakers. I have updated drivers...I do not know what else to try ..sschock

Right-click Computer, select Manage, go to Services and Apps, select Services.

You said, sound on Windows startup is gone. Same story with other Windows sounds?
How exactly did you update sound drivers?

I have sound in media programs that play music and movies. No sound in internet explorer.. I have checked sounds on startup... Everything was working perfectly fine until probably two weeks ago. I uninstalled the sound drivers and then went to Dells sight and downloaded the driver. I did a system restore as far back as I could go which was only 1 week.. I am so frustrated and if nothing else will put the computer back to the factory settings and start over installing everything again.. Any other ideas?? Thanks for your help..sschock

Instead of reinstalling pain, if I were you, I'd buy cheap sound card (~$15), and see, if it works.

Yes, that is probably the next step and easier than reinstalling if it works..
