Windows Vista [Cannot open] Windows Media Player

I can't open Windows Media Player. It is in the start menu. I have tried clicking on it, double clicking on it and right clicking on it and selecting open. I have gone to computer, documents then music and gotten a list of the songs I have downloaded but I can't play them. I can't get the screen that says sync to a device. This has worked fine until the last time I tried to open Player. any ideas?
