I had a laptop with Windows XE that fried its motherboard. Being that the laptop was 4 years old, I just got a new one. The new laptop has Windows Vista, 32 bit. I have a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter. I need to know how to transfer my files from the old hard drive, which I removed, to the new computer. The new one seems to see it in the USB, but I can't access it.
Being a FNG here, I hope you can help me.

Now I've seen the thread the Vista forum is more appropriate and I have moved it there.

If you can see the drive in Windows Explorer and are denied access to it you need to take ownership of it .....

When I say it sees it, I mean through device manager it shows drive on USB, but I can't access anything.

    Under Disk Drives?

Is the drive seen in Disk Management ? Run > type in diskmgmt.msc > Enter (This is for XP - I don't run Vista)

If the drive is seen is a drive letter assigned to it? If not assign one.

Although I don't use Vista I do have a box with Vista Business :)

Hit the globe, bottom lefthand corner - Run is at the bottom of the righthand column of the Start Menu.

On the bottom right I have Control Panel, then Printers, then Help and Support.

Strange, but then I am not familiar with other versions of Vista - screenshot.

Type Run in the search box.

The run option is only available in Vista if you put it there.

In Vista you can use the Start Search box to launch things. Just type diskmgmt.msc in the Start Search box and press [Enter].

Two possibilities as I see it .....

The SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter is malfunctioning - I have experienced that scenario with my adaptor which has never worked.

The drive may have suffered damage when the motherboard fried.

Would be worthwhile checking out the setup on another computer.
