    Hi All,
I've not been able to start my machine normally the last 4 days, I've uninstalled the last few programmes in safe mode, the security center and windows installer seem to have ceased working, cant start the thing normally, I have tried everything. I did manage to save some important data to my ext hd.
I cant create a restore point in safe mode and as I keep getting told the machine cant do this running in a limited diagnostic state, but it wont boot anyother way, I tried to enable the security center and Installer from the msconfig menu, and that didnt work either.
I'm at my wits end, is anybody out there able to help me?

I don't think Vista is different from previous versions. Not being able to boot into normal mode means either a startup program or a driver is not working correctly.

At the Start -> Search bar, type msconfig, there, look under the Startup tab, try unchecking all the programs. If that works, recheck one at a time until you find the culprit.

Look in Device Manager for any problems. Did you install any drivers recently? Also look in Event Viewer, double click on the listing to get more information.

What happens exactly? Does it just stop loading or do you get an error message?

You don't want to make a Restore point when the system is not working, you want to load a previous Restore point.

Have you tried VGA mode or Last known good configuration, in the Startup Options menu?

I think you will find Windows Installer won't work in safe mode, only normal mode, so you need to get back into normal mode to use it.

Just trying the Start-up Tab now, so will let ya know in a bit, thanks for helping :)
Dont know if this helps, but, I cant start up in safe mode w/networking , when I ran av, it ran in a command prompt window(AVG8.5) It showed a trojan d/l but I cant find the results in safe mode? Hmmmmmmm, what to do?
    Suggestions?
No new drivers installed or software that had not already been wotking for a few weeks. It just stops loading or else freezes(happening in safe mode w/n'working) not starting in safe mode now, just freezes while trying to boot up!!

Mine wouldn't boot in normal mode either. Finally, after several attempts to troubleshoot the issue, I discovered that there were 2 antivirus aps loaded. From what I understand, you can only have one so there is no conflict. Check to see if you have more than one loaded.

Hi Monica, it's not that either, I have only 1 a/v running. It's been running CHKDSK checks for the last few hours and ends up freezing and I end up trying to re-boot without getting any joy, cant even boot up in safe mode now, bloody disaster!

Antiviruses just run scans, but it probably does need to run CHKDSK (CHKDSK checks the file system for errors).

If you have a full Vista DVD, you could run a Startup Repair. This is what it says in Help and Support
