I am praying to the computer gods that someone on here has a solution to my problem. I use Windows Vista Home Premium edition.
I was running out of space on my Dell XPS 1710 Laptop and transferred all my photos and videos to an external hard drive. I plugged the hard drive back into my laptop and now I can't view any of my photos or videos. They are still there, taking up many, many GB's. And on a few of the pictures, I can see them on the thumbnail. However, when I go to open them a message pops up on Windows Photo Gallery saying, "Photo Gallery can't open this photo or video because it might have been deleted or is in a location that is not available."
I know I messed up bigtime by not backing them up. Is there any way to save my files or am I out of luck. Any follow up questions you got, send them my way. Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Hi Scouts88. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

What happens when you plug in the external harddrive into a different computer? Have you tried transfering the pictures from the external harddrive back to the actual computer? Do they open there? Are the pictures set to read-only? Try taking ownership of the pictures to rule out any permission issues. Are you running on an administrator account? Do you still have copies of the pictures on your labtop or only on your external drive? Let me know! :)

    Evan,
    Here's an update.
I have been opening the files straight from my external hard drive. When I attempt to copy the files to my laptop it says "Item not found...this file is no longer in the F: etc..."

When I unplug the hard drive and plug it back in, I can view about 50-60% of the pictures in thumbnails and even open a few of them just like normal...but after a couple of minutes it gives me the same message about the file maybe being deleted and I am back to square one.
None of the pics seem to be read-only? I have tried opening them using Picasa but no luck there either? The pictures are there, like I said, they are taking up the space on my external. I don't believe I am running on an administrator account. How exactly would I check. And no, I am kicking myself for this now, but I tranferred the pics to my external becuase I needed to clear some GB's on laptop. Any solutions or do you know which direction to point me in? Appreciate it.

Try this, copy them to a new folder in your C:

This should be under my computer, and C:
then make a new folder so its just C:\new folder

Copy the pictures to there and see if that works, sometimes Vista cannot find the documents folder correctly.

If that fails, try downloading Google's Picasa (just google: picasa) its a free program to view your pictures. Matter of fact, here is the link: GOOGLE PICASAhttp://picasa.google.com/ Maybe this fixes it. Let me know.

Sorry, did Not see your reply until just now. It looks like the hard disk might be damaged. What kind of HD is it? Western Digital and segate have programs that you can download or get off the cd that will check the disk. Also, try doing a scandisk on it. Maybe something has been damaged. Let me know what kind it is, and I will steer you in the right direction. But try the Google Picasa program and let me know if that works too.

    Infonex,
It's a 320 GB SimpleTech Portable External Hard Drive. Unfortunately, no luck with Google Picasa (although it is a nice program, having just discovered it).

Try this little program. Its a freeware disk checking program i just found. I scanned it and its standalone and very well written. Try running it. Ariolic Disk Scanner

If it freezes half way through or the disk stops responding, then its failing. You might need to send it off to a data recovery lab if you cant work with it.

    I replied to your message

I replied but it isnt showing up. 2 of them aren't. Oh well, search for a disk checking software and download it, http://www.ariolic.com/disk-scanner.html and scan it. if it messes up while scanning the disk might be freezing. In that case you are going to need to send it off to a data recover lab if you cant get it to work.:(

To check and see if you an administrator click Start< Control Panel< User Account< Account Name. If it shows up as an administrator then you are one. If it doesn't then see if you can log into an administrator account and then try to view the pictures.

I posted a message though as a new one came in and it did not require the moderated queue process. But then the next one did. Strange.

    Gents,
Tried the Disk Scanner program and like you said, it's freezing. And after having no luck opening the PowerPoint or Word files on the external, I am seeing it as a problem with the external.
As soon as I plug it in, if I am quick about it, I can transfer a few of the pics that I can see on a thumbnail view to my laptop. After doing that, they open just fine. But, like I said earlier, it only works for a short time.
I have downloaded several of the free data recover software programs (Get Data Back, Recover My Files, Stellar Phoenix) but no luck there either. It won't even recognize that there are files on my external.
I am willing to spend the money on a good data recovery lab to save my files. Do any of you have any recommendations on which ones are quality, reputable firms? Thanks.
