Hi all, I come here in search of help :)

I turn on the pc, it loads as normal, then on the welcome scren I type in the password and Windows logs me in. However, from then on there's a blank white screen and no desktop shows.

I can move the cursor around fine, the Windows/Start key doesn't work, but I can bring up the task manager. These processes are currently running:

    csrss.exe
    dwm.exe
    rundll32.exe
    taskeng.exe
    taskmgr.exe
    winlogon.exe

On the application tab I can select new task and navigate to startup a program such as Firefox (which I'm using now), Excel or open up a file that's actually on the desktop without problems, it's in perfect working order basically, other than the actual desktop screen and background is blank, as wll as the toolbar at the bottom, it's missing. When I click on Desktop under favourite links it does show all the files and icons etc that should be there, but the screen itself it just white.

The problem occured after I restarted the machine after installing AVG 8, Spybot 1.6 and Ad-Aware to the computer. It was working perfectly before I restarted, and now this.

Sorry to be a pain, any help would save me from the missus...

    Marc

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Try going into Safe Mode. The desktop should work there. Go the Start line and type msconfig, open System Configuration. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck all the boxes. You should be able to reboot in normal mode. Go to System Configuration and recheck the boxes one at a time and restart until you find the cause of the problem.

Uninstall and reinstall the program or what might work is to find the program's .exe file, right-click on it and select "Run as administrator ".

    Matt
