Wireless Connection OK, but can't get to external addresses

OS: Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Laptop: HP Pavilion 1000tx
AT&T DSL
Belkin router FSD 7230-4

Can't get to any external server through HP laptop computer, but Dell desktop working through the same access point (wired connection) has no problem.

Typing in www.google.com or www.yahoo.com gives "The address is not valid". But IE "Diagnose Connection Problems says "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection."

Avast! antivirus is running, but won't update.
"Err: Cannot connect to download903.avast.com"

Google update can't find server. HP Update won't run, says Internet Connection Required.

But Network connection shows "Connected" through my Belkin router - Excellent signal.

It's not the firewall. No change if I turn it off ( it's sensitive to incoming, not outgoing traffic anyway)

Does anyone have any ideas?

TIA

Beelia

Hi

Some Laptops have a small on off button for the wifi, is your's switched off. This is a common problem with Laptops and Wifi and it is very easy to accidently turn the wifi to the off position.

If it is okay, check your network connections, are they enabled, it may pay to disable and enable again.

Have you turned the laptop off and on, sometimes this works

Has the router recognised you. Use the hard wired PC to look at the wifi settings on your router (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), if you have a secure system (which I hope you have)

is your MAC address recognised?

Good luck,
