Black Screen after Vista update, computer will not load

Hello,

My name is Tomeka Napper, and upon researching this website, I seem to have this same problem as four other members. However, I did not see a response to when it doesn't open at all (not even in safe mode).

My case.

I received a message yesterday to update Vista and I did. The computer requested to restart, upon doing so, I received a blank screen with file data at the top. The computer proceeded to go through each file and then it stopped on a particular file and will not start. I did a hard shut down, tried to open it is safe mode and it will not do it. None of these posting seem to help me understand how to get passed the black screen mode. Any suggestions outside of reformatting the system? I am between homes have have been unable to backup the computer. I am so upset because the laptop has very important information on it that I cannot get to and all my disks are packed away in storage.

I cannot afford to lose any of the information on the computer. I appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks.

Tomeka

My System

You can boot off the Vista DVD and after Vista installs some files & you choose your language & keyboard, choose the option to Repair. When Vista has found your installation click Next, and from the System Recovery Options, you can choose:
  • Startup Repair
    - OR -
  • System Restore

Having no backup of important information is like playing with fire.

Oh Mr. Arie,

You telling me. I literally broke out in tears this morning. Literally. We are currently between homes and will be moving at the end of the month. I did not think installing a vista update would be so traumatic. Thank goodness, I just received a mac with my online classes for me to find this website.

I will check for my windows dvd to see if I brought it to where I am staying and follow your steps. Thank you very much for responding.

Any suggestions and tips once I get it running on how I can back up my files while we are in transition?

Thanks again for the prompt response and I will let you know what happens. I also currently have a mac notebook, would it be safe to backup files on it as well?

Tomeka

For short term backup, you could get a memory stick/drive.

Are the two machines networked together? Just copy important files from one to the other.

Matt

It may just need a longer time to load it all instead of it being a computer problem.

This happened to me also, but I left it alone for an hour or so and it brought it back to full screen itself.
