Running on Windows Vista Premium SP3, I attach a Serial-to-USB bridge cable to a USB cable which plugs into one of the 3 USB port on my notebook. Windows Vista installs the driver from its suggested Internet link. But the driver is installed on Com23, while I need it to be within the range of COM1 to COM8.

Is there a way to re-map it?

I can see how to do it on a Win XP computer. My Vista machine doesn't have any physical COM ports so they don't appear on it until I install one.

Try Device Manager and find the port. Right-click on it and select Properties. Go to the advanced settings and look for the numbering there.
