What the heck is THIS all about ?

This latest Pain that Vista is now throwing at me only started today. It appears on many web sites, INCLUDING THIS ONE!

Window pops up and I can't do anything until I hit the "Allow" or "Deny" button.

I click "deny ". Repeatedly, since the window keeps coming up, trying to repeatedly run the same program (so far it's Adobe Flash and Java that I've noticed).

    I'm running IE 7

I do not believe that any new program / update has happened just prior to this starting.

    So.... What is going on??????

It's NOT my firewall, it WAS a big, ugly yellow-topped Windows pop-up.

The really weird thing is, it is NOT doing it this morning.

(The computer's only been on a for about 5 minutes.....)

If I wasn't heading out in a few minutes to take my kids to Gramma's house this fine Sunday morning I'd be running a full scan with everything I have (and then some) to see if something is there that souldn't be. Obviously, that will be priority #1 when we get back on Monday.

Meanwhile.... any ideas what it was / could have caused it?

It's a security feature of Protected Mode in Internet Explorer that asks and verifies if you will allow a program to run the program from IE. Similar to UAC.
From Internet Explorer, Go to Tools Menu > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Reset Button
To make sure, afterwards reboot your computer.
If this doesn’t work even if you reboot your computer already.
Have a look here for a little further explanation and critique:

OK... then if I am understanding this correctly:

    1 - SOMETHING "glitched ", causing the super-annoying pop-ups, and so
    2 - that's why (since I "re-booted ") it isn't doing it now

If so, then COULD it be posible that RealPlayer is the cause (or is at least the "trip wire ") for all (or most) of my current computer issues? I've been using RealPlayer a lot during the past year to download videos (and some audios) for later playback (and, for the record, NO! Not THOSE kind of videos.) and after a while my desktop XP got so messed up I lost most everything I had on it trying to "fix" the problem(s). So now (after several months) I'm having what could be similar "issues" with my desktop Vista computer. I have NEVER been so frustrated with computers until I discovered I could download videos like a VCR / DVR to be watched later......

BTW - My laptop XP has not given me any similar issues, however I do not use it as much for video downloading for delayed viewing...

OR could this be a non-issue with Toshiba, while RealPlayer has issues with Gateway and hp...

OR is it just an issue with certain versions of Windows (my laptop is XP Home, while the others had XP Media Center Edition and Vista Home which is similar)...

OR possibly an nVidia issue (the video in both my desktops), while my laptop uses ati...

I am not - as far as I know - setting anything up differently between my computers.

Yes. I am dazed and confused...

    And now, possibly, off-topic.

Have a look in the startup tab of Msconfig. You will probably find quite a few things running there which need not be. Real player is one. If Real player, quicktime and such are installed on your computer, then they will be available when you need them. There is no reason why they should be running in situu. OAnother "resident" by default is Adobe reader - you could untick that also. But, if the problem has gone away, it may have been one of the above trying to install an automatic update. Leave it and try out some of the above ideas, should it happen again. The problem will only affect Vista on your computers. Maybe your "home" Vista does not have some or all of the above mentioned progs installed?

For the record... This is what is in my System Cnfiguration:

    -----------------------------------------------

    Widows Defender
    hpsysdrv
    KBD
    OsdMaestro
    HD Audio Control Panel
    hpwuSchd Application
    WinPatrol Monitor
    HP Health Check Scheduler
InstallShield Update Service (for "issch.exe ")
    avast! Antivirus
NVIDIA Compatible Windows Vista Display driver, Version 175.21
    NVIDIA Media Center Library
    Adobe Acrobat
    Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U7
    ZoneAlarm Client
    Real Player (32 Bit)
    QuickTime <-----------*
    MobileMe
    iTunes <--------------*
    Microsoft Windows Operating System
InstallShield Update Service (for "isupm.exe ")
    Spybot - Search & Destroy
    OpenOffice.org 2.4
hp digital imaging - hp all-in-one series
    QuickBooks Automatic Update
    iTunes <--------------**
    QuickTime <----------**

    ----------------------------------------------

    notes on QuickTime & iTunes:
    * = currently checked
    ** = NOT checked

It still looks to me like RealPlayer is either the problem OR is what gets messed up and causes VISTA to mess up.

Late last night I was trying to download a video (via RealPlayer) to watch this morning, but it was downloading so extremely slowly that I just finally left it and went to bed. This morning, my wife turned on our other computer (the one with the laser printer hooked up to it, with XP MCE) but could not print, so I had to re-boot the Vista computer. (And yes, the video I was downloading had finally downloaded onto the Vista computer and appears to be OK...)

SO --- What looks to be my issue?
And/or does RealPlayer really NOT play well with Vista?
AND if so, what can/should I use to download videos from the Internet?????
