Windows Vista 0x00000124 BSOD

    Hi,

    I have VISTA 64BIT and when ever I play a game (COH), I'm getting a lot of BSOD's... Hardware failure with error message: 0x00000124.

    I looked up this error message and noticed a microsoft hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952681

    According to the website... it states the below

    I really was lost on the symptoms and I don't know if this applies to me... Can someone assit me in putting this into english for me :)

    Basically I have a NVIDIA 8800 ultra video card... and I get BSOD when I play COH in particular... And I'd like to know if this may apply to me or not.

    Follow these instructions to post a Dump Data Log.

    If you do not have a dump, ensure that your machine is configured to write out a dump by following the directions from microsoft

    I followed the instructions but I'm stuck... On the below step
    Select a dump using the tool and 'generate log'. (Note: You should be connected to the Internet while debugging.)
    When I click on "generate log" a window comes up "Log File Complete" and below "When the dos window closes, your dump output has been saved to c:\debuglog.txt "

    But I don't see this file... do I need to restart PC ?

    If you go to Start -> Computer, click on Local Disk C: in the left pane, it should be listed in the right pane.

    Thank you Matt for your assistance, but following your steps.... expected file "debuglog.txt" is not there.

    As mentioned, after selecting dump file (C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini092508-02.dmp), I clicked on 'generate log' and it indicated that output would be in c:\ but it is not there. I also opened a windows explorer window and placed this file name in search box and it does not find this file.... It appears that this file was never generated.

    Please advise.

    I can only think that you might have a security program that stops any writing directly to the C: drive.

    For the original question, "hot plug" is when you connect/remove a device when the system is running and that device is usually non-removable when the system is running. A device that is not "hot plug" cannot be added or removed while the system is running, you would need to shut down and connect or disconnect it then.

    Since it happens during a game, the game program may be trying to use a drive the wrong way (drives are usually the devices that are hot-plugged).

    Look for any patches at the game's website.

    Check in Disk Management that any of your drives are being described the wrong way (eg, described as removable when they are not removable).

    A PS...Make sure you are not doing something in the game that is "not good" :D

    In the game I like, I can skip the intro by left-clicking, it occasionally causes a reboot/BSOD. It is not Windows, it is the game.

    A sudden restart/reboot will leave "open files" on the hard disk. First, find out what is causing the BSOD's, then...you may need to run Error Checking on your drive/s to clean up the file system. Search for Error Checking in Help and Support.

    OK,

    I'm at work now, so I'm not able to verify a couple of things... but let me mention that last week I resolved a major problem/headache and I'm starting to think this was related.

    I'm almost sure that BSOD occured before resolving this problem.

    OK, the problem that I had and had learned to live with... Whenever I opened Windows Explorer, it was always give me "Not Responding ". It would eventually come back after like 5-10mins. If I attempted to close window I would have to hard reset PC since PC would eventually become non-responsive.

    To resolve this problem, I was always looking at startup applications or what software could be causing this problem... this problem always appeared to be random.

    Solution: I currently have 2 DVD drives and always had 2 CD's with games Crysis & AOE III inserted. The problem was with game Crysis. After taking this game out of DVD drive... problem resolved (Windows explorer opens fine now). Since I inserted & tested other games on this same drive, something is wrong with Crysis DVD or maybe some type of encrytion with this game and windows explorer does not read properly. I had checked to see if I had latest firware for DVD drives and I had latest firmware. It never really occurred to me that this particular game could be the cause of this... and belive me... This caused me alot of trouble & headache trying to fix this... and eventually gave up and tried to live with... But now, since this is resolved... this had taken a major headache off my back.

    Now, back with BSOD. This weekend I played all weekend and did not get any BSOD's when playing COH... but the jury is still out if the Crysis game was the root cause in getting BSOD's. I suppose, that while playing COH (I don't need to have COH game in DVD drive to play COH) game attempts to read DVD drives ? and since PC was unable to read Crysis DVD game... it became unresponsive and I get BSOD... ?? I would get BSOD's like after 20 mins into the game... and it did not occurr in every game. I would like to continue testing/playing before I sign off on another major headache..

    BTW, sorry for the long reply :)
