immediately after downloading SP1. i tried a restart of my system.
during middle of this, error message came up "problem with restart,
do you want to diagnose "? i said yes. it did it's thing and said i
needed to restore my system. it restored to my last restore point,
the one b4 i loaded SP1, and the system restarted. now my system
keeps telling me i have a new update available (i'm assuming it is
SP1 again). i am very cautious about downloading again. anyone
    else had this problem..nutbag123..

    Hi,

Have a look in %windir%\logs\cbs\CBS.log and let us know what errors are listed.

To open that file, first type wordpad in Vista's Start Search menu. At the top of the menu you'll see WordPad listed. Right-click and select Run as administrator. Next choose the Open command in WordPad, and in the File name: box, enter %windir%\logs\cbs\CBS.log and click Open.

Aslo note that Microsoft offers free support for SP1.

startup problems wid SP1 after DL in Vista

hello, i followed your instructions and found many many lines
of code. after scrolling through it all, i did not find the word
"error" in any line. so, your suggestion is to run the download
again?? since i still have all the code, is there a way to bypass
another download and reload and run all the saved source code.
i'm guessing now, that maybe something other than the down-
load may have caused the startup problem. a saving grace
would be that i could establish another "good" restore point,
and 'go for it', huh? nutbag123...

Usually, those are huge logs. Open that file again, and go Edit>Find (or CTRL+F), and put "error" in search box.

bunches of occurences of word "error ", or "Error "

    Broni,
thank you for the excellent suggestion. able to follow your instruction,
exactly, and found there were multiple occurences of word "error" in the
text. too numerous, in fact, to attempt to list them all here. i really
thought that i had searched manually and found none. but not the
case. do you think SP1 should be run again? or do you think this
mite be something microsoft needs to know about? it is a lengthy
code list but, i do think if i had an e-mail address, i could select all,
copy, past, send for review. beyond my capabilities to identify and
understand meanings of point where "errors" occur. thanks nutbag123.

This happened to me many months ago. I ended up rolling back to before I installed the thing and NEVER EVER let it install again. I pick the updates one at a time and never let them automatically download and install. That way I know what did the problem. It is easy for pros and those who work with and on pcs to ask that non pros list and work on these error messages, but very time consuming, nerve killing and more harm than good can be done. Suggest again that one set the machine to notify but not download or install updates or whatever you wish to call them. Pick out one at a time and download and install one at a time. Saves just about all of these horrible situations.

I never did install the thing again and the Home Premium pc is stable and good.
