on my desktop, after moving the spacing between my icons on my desktop a little closer via tuneup utilities (to fit more on the screen) these little feint boxes appeared around my icons - making it look a bit like windows 98!!

    how do i remove them?

    thankyou

Can't say that I see any boxes.
What happens when you don't use any wallpaper?

look closer, there are feint grey boxes around the icons, not the text.

any wallpaper/no wallpaper the same thing.

Undo the changes by the tuneup utility. More then likely that's to blame.

You can move them closer using Windows native 'tools': Right-click empty space on Desktop & click Personalize. Click Window Color and Appearance. At the bottom, click Open classic appearance properties for more color options, click the Advanced... button. Under Item scroll down to the Icon Spacing (Horizontal) & Icon Spacing (Vertical) settings.

i removed tuneup from my system, then did as suggested above. boxes still there ... though they vanish during the 'please wait' process as windows makes the changes....then they come back permanently

Don't know if this will help but I have noticed, on my own desktop, that some shortcuts will have the thin gray box while others will not. For all of them I can adjust the icon size using the shortcut method of holding the control key down and scrolling my mouse wheel down to decrease the size of the icons until grey boxes disappear. It seems the larger the icon the clearer the gray boxes become. Just an F.Y.I.

Thats something to do with the tool you were using. Uninstall that program, but beofre you do, undo the changes ;)
