I finally decided to install the prerequisite updates for SP1. I installed 938371, but when trying to install 937287, I receive a message that this update is not for my Vista. As far as I know, from what I have read, both these updates are required prior to installing SP1. I have Vista Home Edition Premium. I tried to uninstall 938371 and I can't. Please help. TIA.

Hi Ann. You only need to install the prequesite updates if you are going to install Vista SP1 through Windows Update. If you would prefer the standalone version then you can download it from here. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en The standalone version of Vista SP1 already includes the prequesite updates so you don't need to install those updates unless you are installing Vista SP1 from Windows Update.
Thank you so much for your help. I intended to D/L SP1 and install at my leisure. I'll try System Restore to see if I can get rid of KB938371. If not, will it do any harm to go ahead and D/L and install SP1 anyway?
No, it won't do any harm to install SP1 if you don't have all of those prequesite updates installed because the standalone version already includes those updates. If I were you I would download it and install it. If it fails to install then do a system restore and try again. BTW I tried to install SP1 using Windows Update and it failed all 4 times that I tried. I finally downloaded the standalone installer and I didn't experience any problems at all with installing it.
You answered my next question. I wondered if there were any benefits to downloading the standalone package vs. using Windows update. I guess so from your experience. I started to D/L SP1 but it stated it would take 7 hours, so I'll have to wait until the weekend.
Wow 7 hours! When I downladed SP1 it only took about 30 minutes for it to download. Maybe its because I'm using a high speed cable internet connection.
Some users encountered an issue last month when installing the Servicing Stack Update (KB937287). We've investigated this carefully and learned that it occurs only in certain rare situations. Specifically, this happens because the update needs to be completely installed before a restart occurs, but something caused a reboot during the install. While the update was carefully designed to avoid many of the common reasons for an inadvertent restart during installation, this issue was caused by some that were not caught. By temporarily suspending automatic distribution, and in making a small change on our Windows Update server, we believe we've largely eliminated this problem (our support call volume reflects this). We did find one aspect of the problem that was exacerbated when the update was installed using automatic updates. For this issue, we're planning to release an additional update before we resume automatic distribution of the Servicing Stack Update.
So what does this mean exactly? For those who've already installed the Servicing Stack Update or are waiting to install SP1 until Windows Update offers it to you automatically, you do not need to do anything at all. But if you want to install SP1 manually and haven't yet installed the Servicing Stack Update, you'll find it on Windows Update when you visit.
or may be you can try to download the 937287 package separately and try to install it on your machine
MS recommend to use Windows updates where applicable because the standalone package contains many unwanted overheads like additional language support etc.
Also try reading the following before if you try to install SP1 via automatic update
As far as the Servicing Stack Update (KB937287), I had downloaded it and tried to install from my machine when I got the error.
Such confusion with SP1. I haven't installed yet because I am a bit worried about it. I prefer to download SP1 and install. BUT, will the two prerequisite updates be installed if I do that, as Elmo stated?
Ann, like I stated above, when you install SP1 using the standalone installer it will install all of the necessary updates including the prequesite updates that you mentioned.
UPDATE: SP1 installed without any obvious problems taking about 1 hour. As you stated, Evan, I got KB938371 and KB937287 along with SP1 (KB936330). However, I also found KB935509 and KB937954, the first is not for Vista Home Premium and the latter doesn't seem to exist. Should I just ignore these? Will leaving them installed cause any problems? TIA!
I'll wait for a reply before I go on to install the APR updates.
Hi Ann. I am glad the installation of SP1 went smoothly. As far as those updates go they won't do any harm. Windows Vista SP1 will install all the updates that are included with the package regardless of what version of Vista you are running.
