Windows Vista Software Update Problems

    I am having problems when updating Vista. I receive 57A errors for three updates:
    Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2007 Junk EMail Filter (KB947945)
    Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2007 (KB946983)
    Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2007 (KB946974)
    Security Update for Microsoft Office System 2007 (KB947801)​

    These errors started back on 2/14/08. My restore point only goes back to 3/14/08.

    I Goggled many solutions but none worked.

    I also receive errors when trying to update ITunes. That error message is:

    Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes|Interface\{915DA835-02FE-4953-92FA-624BDF85AB}\ProxyStubCLsid.
    Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.​


    I did try to right click the update file and "run as an administerâ€. Same error message as above.

    I tried to edit the key in the register. That error is:

    ProxyStubCLsid.cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied.​


    I right click on the registry key and select "permissionsâ€. The message is:

    “You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for ProxyStubCLsid, but you can permission changes." ​


    If I add a User name and select "full controlâ€, I receive the error:

    "Unable to save permission changes on ProxyStubClsid. Access is Denied.â€​

    Lastly, I tried to add a new admin user role (I originally only had one user role with admn rights). I experience the same error messages as the other admin role.

    I have Windows Vista Home Premium, SP1.

    Any ideas? THANKS.

    Hi,

    If you want, post some more information on the Windows Update error messages. Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

    To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

    I will stay far away from your itunes software problem :eek:

    Software Update Problems - Error Log

    Thanks for taking the time to help. I'll ignore the ITunes problem, too!

    Are you running as Administrator? Did you turn off UAC?

    Updates are not downloaded or the “Automatic Updates” icon does not display the status of downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service

    Now the other error that shows:

    WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800703f0

    Points to a permission problem.

    You could try resetting the Windows Update Data Store, in case it is corrupt.

    Try this:

    1. Click Start, and in the Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt)
    2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter
    3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\DataStore, then press Enter. Type Y to acknowledge the command.
    4. Run Regedit (Start > Run, type regedit and press Enter)
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ WindowsUpdate. Right-click on WindowsUpdate in the tree and choose Delete. Close Regedit.
    6. At the command prompt, type net start wuauserv, press Enter and close the command prompt.
    7. Use the Windows Update Web site again to install updates.

    Well, I followed your instructions. Did it work? Kind of.

    I was able to update Windows via the update webpage, however, it was not the updates that I was having problems with. My system was updated with "Defintion Update for Windows Defender ".

    I'll keep an eye on the updates over the next few days to see if the other previously unsuccessful updates are attempted.
