A friend of mine has a new PC with Vista Home Premium installed. They are having a problem playing WMV files whose properties list Media Player 9 codecs. They can see the video just fine, but there is no sound. I found a codec pack on the MS site for Media Player V7.1 and higher, but it doesn't list Vista as a system requirement, it only goes as high as XP, so I was reluctant to install it for fear it might do more harm than good.

Does anyone here know if this is safe to install on a Vista machine, or if it will even solve the problem?

    Hi,
I would expect that WMP would be updating it's CODECs automatically. It may be that it requires more general CODECs. Try looking for updates at the Audio Controller manufacturer's website. It may be that Windows has installed general drivers for the audio controller, it may require that the manufacturer's drivers and software are installed.
