Possible to add XPPro to a Vista Basic laptop?

I'm organizing a new laptop for a friend. I'd rather give her a machine with XPPro than Vista, but I haven't been able to buy a notebook with XP, so Vista (Home Basic) it'll have to be.

My question: Can I add XPPro to this new laptop? If it's possible, I'd like the machine to boot into XP as default.

Advice would be appreciated :-)

Possible, but time consuming, see here ...

Thanks PeteC.

I saw that site before I posted here and decided it looked a little too tricky and hoped that someone here might know of an easier solution :-)

I'm considering either giving it a miss altogether or maybe reformatting the new laptop and installing XP Pro.

Appreciate your input...

Another Luddite? Why not give her a Vista machine up and running. We should look to the future Masonite, and if she is fairly new to computers she will have no anti-Vista bias!

You have to bear in mind that as soon as you recommend a computer and OS to a friend you immediately become their source of troubleshooting/maintenance Much easier if you are using the same OS.

Thanks guys. Several points come to mind: first, I'm a tech and I build and service pcs. Second, my customer is actually my first ex-wife, and she knows zip about OSs, other than how to play games on the XPP desktop I built her.

I know that Vista isn't going to do her any good; shucks, I personally consider Bill Gate's latest idiot-savant child a pain in the butt for all the reasons that a quick tour of the internet will find 10,000 other sufferers moaning about.

But I won't rave. Suffice to say that I run it on one of my workshop machines and I don't like it. I'm not a luddite but I don't like it. All we wanted was a better XP and what we actually got was a software nightmare; another overblown anachronism like ME, but with more bugs than a sick maggot.

As I said, I think my best plan will be to wipe the HDD of Vista Basic and install XPP. The notebook should come with a set of recovery CDs, so if it doesn't work I can always revert.
