Windows Vista Windows Vista Updates Fail to Install!

Hello everyone. A few days ago on my Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit edition computer, I was notified that 5 new security updates were available and that I should install them. I proceeded to do so. After they installed everything seemed normal so I rebooted my machine and then went to check for updates again. This time I discovered that 3 of the 6 updates failed to install. They were Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB933566), Update for Windows Vista (KB936357) , and Security Update for Windows Vista (KB931213). The installation fails every time I try to install these 3 updates. The things that I have tried to get these 3 updates to install without success have been:

1. I have tried updating the computer using windows update and I let windows to try and install the updates automatically.
2. I manually downloaded the update packages from the microsoft download center and then attempted to install the updates.
3. I stopped and restarted the Windows Update service and then I tried to install the updates.
4. I deleted the softwaredistribution folder and then rebooted my machine to allow windows to recreate it, because I thought it may have gotten corrupted. It wasn't and the updates still failed to install.
5. I went to command prompt and entered the fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ command as an administrator. It said that the operation was successfull but the updates still failed after a reboot.
6. I tried shuting down my antispyware software thinking that they were conflicting with the updates but they still failed.

I don't know what else to do. It seems that all of the other updates installed fine except these 3. Why? The error code I am getting is 80070002. I went to the help and support center and followed the directions about resolving that error code but the updates still didn't install. I have tried google to no avail although it seems that its a very common problem. When I try to install any one of the 3 updates it starts to install and gets to about 97% of the way there before it stops on that spot for about 2 minutes and then it says that updates failed to install. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I think I've tried everything and nothing I have tried has made any progress on this problem. Does anyone know a solution for this issue without me having to reinstall Windows? Thanks in advance.

Try this:

1. Click Start, and in the Search box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt)
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, then press Enter. Type Y to acknowledge the command.
4. Type net start wuauserv, press Enter
5. Use the Windows Update Web site again to install updates.

 

Hi Arie. Sorry for the delay. I followed your instructions exactly and after it finished I closed the command prompt. Then I rebooted my machine and then my computer wouldn't boot at all. It said that a windows file was missing or corrupt. So I booted from the CD and I ran the startup repair which thankfully repaired the error and I was able to boot up my computer. I then tried to update my computer again. Once again the updates failed to install. But instead of giving me the error code that I mentioned in my previous post which was 80070002, I got the error code C000000D. I googled it and got no results for it. Are there any other options besides reinstalling Windows? BTW I ran sfc /scannow and it found a few bad files and it said that it wasn't able to repair them all. It also said to look at the CBS.log file for more details. I am now beginning to think that I may have a windows file missing that may cause the updates to fail. Or maybe the updates don't have full permisiions to install. Is there any other way I could fix this problem. I could do a repair install on my computer and I wouldn't lose any data but that will take along time and I am trying to avoid it. I need to find a solution for this issue. Just so you know, your error isn't related to the instructions I gave above, I run them on my own machine without any problems.


Can you post the bottom 1/3 or so of the WindowsUpdate.log? You'll probably have to check Include non-indexed, hidden and system files when doing an advanced search. The log file will be in \Users\user id\AppData\Local\Microsoft\

Also would you like me to post part of the CBS.log file as well because maybe it will list the files on my computer that could have gotten corrupted and prevented the updates from installing. One last thing I forgot to mention, when I ran that command from cmd you gave me I noticed while it was running I got a lot of access is denied messages even though I ran the command as an administrator. Is that supposed to happen or not.

Hi again Arie. I did the repair install and everything is working good and all is well. I greatly appreciate your time and effort trying to help me out with my issue. All of the Windows Vista Updates (including the 3 that I mentioned that wouldn't install), installed successfully. So that just shows that I had a missing or corupted Windows file that was preventing the updates from installing. To be honest with you I have had more issues with Windows Vista than I did with Windows XP Professional. That was my 4th time having to reinstall Windows Vista. I just hope I won't have to do it again in the future if something else were to go wrong on my system. Anyway thanks again for your help.

 

Hi CraigM. I'm sorry that some of the updates you mentioned failed to install. In my case the reason the updates failed was because of a missing or corrupted syste file. Have you tried running sfc /scannow from command prompt? If that doesn't work you could either just forget about the update or you could as a last resort do a repair install of Windows Vista Ultimate. Like I said in my previous post, the repair install fixed my problem and all of my updates installed successfully. Anyway I hope this thread has given you some valuable information and if you have any more questions about updates feel free to post back in this thread or you can make a new thread. Hopefully you can get that stubborn update to install properly.

 

Hi again CraigM. Since having done the repair install on my Windows Vista machine 4 times already, I have lost no personal data on my computer. The repair install that I am talking about is technically called an In-place-upgrade which upgrades your previous Windows installation to Windows Vista. In reality though it serves as the same purpose as doing a repair install in Windows XP. The In-Place-Upgrade replaces/repairs all of the Windows files on the harrdive from the CD. All of your applications and personal settings will remain intact but you will have to reinstall all of your Windows Updates. So as far as doing the In-place-Upgrade/repair install the only thing that I didn't like about it was that it took a very long time to complete. It took nearly 7 hours on my computer to finish. One last thing that I forgot to mention, is make sure you have at least 12 GB of free harrdrive space on your computer otherwise the In-Place-Upgrade option will be grayed out and you won't be able to run it. So you should run disk cleanup and clean out any temporary files before running the installation. If you have any more questions about the In-Place-Upgrade/repair install please let me know.
