Running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit.

Computer randomly freezes 2-3 times a day and hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. The only way to get it unfrozen is to manually restart the computer. I was going to attempt to do a system restore but the dates don't go back far enough before the problem started. I've tried running SFC, Malware Bytes, Chkdsk, etc. No problems detected.

Not sure if this may help anyone, but I also have to frequently hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to end the process "explorer.exe" and restart it because it hangs/freezes all the time!

Computer works fine besides this. Any help would be appreciated.

When was the last you opened up the case and cleaned the inside of the computer or checked to see if all of your fans are working properly.

I regularly clean it with compressed air and all the fans are spinning as well.

Have you taken out RAM and Cards and cleaned connections and connectors?
Have you defragged and kept your Windows Up to Date? Removed unnecessary programs/software you no longer use cleared Temp Files. Neil.

Windows Updates are set to automatic. I clean up unwanted files and programs with CCleaner.

I still have over 65GB of space in total on my two drives so I know space is not an issue.

I haven't defragged the computer though. Could that be the problem? It just started doing this maybe a week ago.

If you Google your problem, you will see how big a deal it was/is and all the various suggestions which fixed the users comps.
Volume Shadow Copy (called VSS/Volume Snapshot Service) is a part of Vista that took up space and time.
Make sure you have your Drivers up to date. Neil.

I defragged both drives, but it still froze a few hours afterwards. I didn't restart after I defragged though, so maybe that's why. I guess I will see if it freezes again since restarting, but any more suggestions in the mean time would be great because I doubt that solved the issue.

    Thanks.

I've already tried creating a new user profile and it still froze.
I have also tried running CHKDSK and no errors were found.

    Hi Supermaine.

Lets see what is starting up with your machine.

Please download Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then post a screenshot of all the startup entries in your next reply.

Then lets check your system temperatures. Download and run Open Hardware Monitor. Then while the computer is idle post a screenshot of your systems temperatures using Open Hardware Monitor in your next reply.

The screenshots are too small for me to read clearly. Can you make the text bigger? Instead of taking a screenshot of the entire window, make the window smaller and use the Alt and PrtScn keys to take a screenshot of the active window and then upload those pictures instead. Just edit your current post with the new screenshots.

In Autoruns remove the following items:

    rdpclip
    Apple Push
    H2O
    Registry Monitor
    NVIDIA Backend
    Reatlek HD Audio Control Panel
    Realtek Voice Manager
    Java Update Scheduler
    XboxStat
    Daemon Tools Lite
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    Windows Mail

Then reboot the computer and let me know if the computer is still freezing up. Your system temperatures are fine so your computer is not overheating.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.

Though I must say, the computer doesn't freeze on start up. It freezes randomly throughout the course of the day, but I'll report back to you the next time it does (if it does).

So the computer ran about 10 hours since I last posted and just froze on me.

I'm assuming that means it doesn't have anything to do with the startup programs.

Who manufactured your Hard Drive and did you try using their diagnostics or Acer's diagnostics. Just to rule out that the drive isn't starting to fail.

I just ran Western Digital's DLGIDAG Tool Quick Test and it says it passed.

I'll run the Extended Test now just to be sure.

As I said, it passed the Quick Test.

During the extend test it says "Test found bad sectors that may be repairable" - I click repair but it says "Error was detected while repairing bad sectors ".

I've run Chkdsk multiple times and it finds no errors though.

I did a repair install this morning of Vista and so far my explorer hasn't been freezing and neither has the computer. But it's only been on a few hours so I'll wait and see how it plays out.
