    Hello,
I have a machine that is running Vista x64 Home Premium.

I have had so many access problems because Vista only supports up to Explorer 9.

    So I bought Windows 7 x64 Ulta.
I also bought a new SATA drive to use for back up

I have an Nvidia NForce Motherboard and lots of powerful RAM, a decent Quad Intel 2.83 CPU, fully SLI,

Is it possible to update the Vista x64 Home Premium with the Windows x64 Ulta or would I have to upload all my files to say..... Carbonite..... and then trash Vista altogether and start from scratch????

What would be the best way to get my machine updated???

Hi blakston6286. In this scenario its best if you perform a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit as it will lead to less problems later on.

You should backup all your important data and then run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to make sure your system can run Windows 7.

Also make sure the drivers for your hardware support Windows 7 and then consult this guide, How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7.

Got to agree with Evan on this. This way you will have a nice new clean install and no trash hanging around if you do it like an upgrade.
Run the Advisor and make sure that the PC will be able to handle Win 7.

Thank you so very much Evan Omo.
I ran the Advisor and everything I have onboard is compatibnle with my Windows 7 Ultima.
So I guess I will now thoroughly read how to do a clean install.
    and followinstructions.
Thank you for all the pertinent brilliant information.
Once again I am amazed at the level of expertise that is found on Windows BBS.
I hope this thread helps others with a similar question sometime in the future.
You are the best. Let's hope I am intelligent enough to follow the instructions correctly.

Well if you have any questions about the procedure then feel free to ask. :)

Please update this thread when you get Windows 7 up and running and let us know how the procedure went.

SorryI hven't gotten back about my question.
I did download and run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and got a glowing greenlight on all my hardware and software. I am not going to upgrade my current computer but rather buy an identical Motherboard and GPU and RAM etc and fire it up with Windows 7 Ulta. Needless to say I am going to have to piecemeal the components over time as I can afford them. I estimate I will be able to complete the build around 6 months from now unless I get a financial windfall which is highly unlikely.
The Windows 7 Upgrade Avisor was a brilliant choice on your part.
    Thank YOU....
It reall helped me decide to keep using all the components I have running my current computerbecause they appeared to be excellent choices to begin with, which since I hand picked them all without anyones assistance makes me feel I am progressing in understanding a bit more about compatability and function.
I hope this thread is helpful to others in the future..
Thank you very much for your knowledgable and competent help.
    A Blaklston
