There were 5 important updates and after installing them either computer would re-start. I fixed the labtop by running the repair, but, am still working on the desktop. I got it up, after repair, but, Firefox and Norton won't run. Get message that XPCOM will not connect. There is no XPCOM on either computer. Any one else have these problems since installing the latest windows updates? The problem is apparently with the security update for vista KB2922229

    Thanks,

    Marv

Thanks for the info, I have already visited the referenced site and am not pleased with the fixes. Is subject security update really worth all of the effort and fuss. It actually caused a lot of problems on both my computers. I had to repair one and tried to restore the other. I had to reinstall Firefox. The update is on the laptop and it appears to be working ok after the repair. On the desktop the updates froze my computer and I had to restore. I reinstalled the other updates, but, hide the KB2922229. To me the problem is with the update, not my computers. This is the first security update to cause such problems in a few years.

"Failed to connect to a windows service.

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond. "

Got the above message after installing updates yesterday, kb2936068, kb 2922229

    Resolved by the following procedure:

    Opened 'services.msc',

then checked status of 'Systems Event Notification Service', by right-click > Properties and made sure set to 'Automatic', followed by 'Start'

Did the same for WLAN Autoconfig, making sure set to 'Automatic'.

Restarted the computer and problem disappeared - so far anyway. Nor recurred after several reboots over the past 24 hours for various, unconnected reasons.
