    Dear All,

    I'm afraid it's me again.

I've tried every which way that I know, and a few that I didn't, to get my system defragmenter to defragment.

    NOTHING happens.

Using cmd a couple of commands produce a report that there is "0% framented ", which presumably, confirms that defragmentation, (is that a word?), is not required.

This is all very reassuring, ( I think), but doesn't alter the fact that I cannot defragment if I want to.

Before I give my machine a **** good thrashing can someone offer me some instruction so that I may rectify the ruluctance of this very naughty system tool?

    Many thanks, as always.

    Regards,

    Graham

PS: Sorry about the four letter word. It begins with a "D ".

Given that the drive is indeed fragmented - I have no idea what level of fragmentation Windows considers to be zero, I suggest you try out a third party defragmenter - Auslogics. I use this in preference to the Windows (7) defragmenter as that never appeared to do anything unless manually initiated and Diskeeper ran almost continuously

What does the command defrag c: -a -v show?

And yea, if you have 0% fragmentation, why would you want to run a defrag?

If you insist, you can run defrag -w from the command prompt to force a defrag.

    Dear PeteC and Arie,

    Thanks for your comments.

    Will try Auslogics.

Pete, what is "Diskeeper" please ?

Command defrag c: -a -v, shows, after approx 8 minutes a comprehensive report with the following sub headings---- "Analysis Report ", "File Fragmentation--0% ", "Free Space Fragmentation ", "Folder Fragmentation" and "MFT Fragmentation ". The final comment is "You do not need to defragment this volume ".

Now Arie, I do not want to defrag. We had a similar sortie during my last thread. With the greatest respect, this is not the point. My system has an in house defragmentation tool and it doesn't seem to work. I want to know why not and, how to rectify this problem. Is it simply that defragmentation is not needed, therefore the tool refuses to run ?

    Await final comments please.

    Regards,

    Graham

So you'll need to talk to the people responsible for the in house tool then.

As I said, Microsoft's tool won't run if there i no need for it to run, but if you insist you can force it (from the command prompt as I posted).

My Windows Defragmenter won't defragment and it won't yell me why?

Dear Arie, PeteC and retired learner,

Sorry for being so long in responding. I was away for a few days at Easter and then I had a problem, again, with my printer. There's nothing worse, is there, than a printer that won't print, except, of course, a defragmenter that won't defragment.

Anyway, I have installed Auslogics Disk Defrag and I'm happy with it. It is very polite. Diskeeper is an interesting, constantly running, program but I can't afford it.

My "system/in house" defragmenter IS, of course, Microsoft's Windows Vista tool (see post title). I don't recall, Arie, you saying before that it won't run if there is no need for it to run. I think I would have noticed because this is the answer to my original question ! Thank you.

I still think it is very rude of it to simply ignore me ! I think it should at least, put my mind at rest, by TELLING me that defragmentation is not needed. I will give it a good talking to.

Thank you all again for your input.

    Regards,

    Graham
