    G'day Folks,

ASUS M51S Laptop Recovery used my mistake !

These things happen once in a while, i.e. infrequently, and I must admit I have forgotten how to recover, i.e reverse the mistake made by the Customer.

For what ever reason, when the customer booted the system the ASUS Recovery option came up in the boot screen and the Customer thought that it needed this to be performed.

This then re-installed the Factory Defaults, i.e. re-installed Vista Ultra 32bit and placed the original data from the original setup including installed software etc., into the "UserName" folder (for the purposer of this topic we shall call it Susan)

The Susan folder contains all of the structure, files and folder, NTUSER files, Documents and all of the folders contained originally on the HDD.

Is there a way / method we can restore this original structure please ??

The current default Win Vista Ultimate does not have a restore point other than the ASUS Recovery when it was performed, i.e. does not have a restore point older than the date on which the ASUS recovery was performed.

There is a way to do this from memory, however I have forgotten how, any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

If it was actually the "Factory Defaults" option, the hard disk was overwritten (re-imaged). In that case there is no "memory ".

The files could still be on disk, unless they were overwritten. File recovery would be difficult or expensive.

Did they make any type of backup? OEM system manufacturers often "urge" users to make recovery disks. Some back-up to a separate partition. You would need to check information at Asus,

    G'day Mattman,

Thanks for trying to help me.
    Answer to the questions No!
Customer it appears tried to fix issues herself and after investigating the User folder, the content of most is corrupt or the installed software deleted.

    So back to square 1.

Will mar this as resolved - as I do not have the time to go and do a HDD search and recovery for the folders and files.

pcbugfixer, I don't know if you have tried this free program called TestDisk, may take part of your stress by recovering some data though maybe not all. Hope you luck.

    Best regards!

    G'day "drwyne "

Ticked does say "Resolved" i.e. meaning it is closed or we have moved beyond it and fixed it in an other way.

    Thanks for info anyway :)
