Hello. I'm trying to set up a VPN on a Windows 2003 Server machine. Unfortunately during the wizard I get the error message that "Routing and Remote Access Service could not be started. "
After further investigation, I learned that the service could not start because its dependencies, specifically the "NetBIOSgroup" service, does not exist. In fact, no service named anything NetBIOS exists on my machine.
I've searched every search engine, everywhere I know to look, and could find no solution. Do I need to install NetBIOS somehow? Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks
    Roman

NetBIOS is a network Protocol suite that sits on top of TCP/IP and provides service such as network recognition via computer name rather than DNS name.

In your situation I would check my TCP/IP setting on your network adapter.

    • Open network connection folder
    • Right click on your active network connection icon and select "Properties" from the list of options
    • Highlight the item "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" (you may have to scroll down through the items listed as this one tends to be at the bottom) and then click on the "Properties" button.
    • Click on the "Advanced" button
    • Click on the "WINS" tab
The screen you are then presented with gives you a list of option for using NetBIOS. Make sure your system does not have "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" selected.

"Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is NOT selected. It is enabled, but the actual NetBIOS services are somehow not installed or at least not present in the Services console, and no options for NetBIOS seem to be available anywhere else, including add/remove Windows components.
Thanks for your reply and I hope you can help me further!

I'm down to google searches then. I found a lot of postings of people with similar problems but no solution. However, I also found these two posts:

    http://board.iexbeta.com/lofiversion/index.php/t25615.html

Suggests that the Remote Registry Service needs to be enabled

    http://forums.kisland.com/read.php?f=4&i=1156&t=834

Suggest reinstalling the 'client for microsoft networks'.

I'd suggest you try the second first (reinstalling the 'client for microsoft networks') as that sounds like a more likely route to success.

Some other postings suggested that the NetBIOSgroup service was installed as part of the network drivers, so it may be worth trying to reinstall your network drivers if neither of the two suggestions above work.

Beyond that, I am afraid I am out of ideas.
