Registry Problem.....

Hey Guys,
my ol' dad has a dinosaur (Win 98SE, Pentium 466, 4.5gb HDD etc) that was running like a turtle. Years of grandkids installing garbage clogged it up.
So I installed CCleaner and Registry Cleaner Expert, uninstalled a lot of unwanted stuff, cleaned and defragged registry.

Ran like a greyhound...lmao

BUT - every time you reboot, Windows comes up with the BLUE screen 'Rebuilding Registry' which takes around 20 minutes then it runs fine.

I've pulled my hair out trying to figure the prob, got no idea.

I'd like to (throw it away!!!) reformat, but he has his games on it (he's 77 years old) and I don't have the install disks or the Mobo drivers.

Any clues?

Got answer from another Forum for those interested......

"1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you are running Windows Me, start your computer with the startup disk.
2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.

5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer."

I would suggest this. First run Scandisk if you haven't already for this. Then Shutdown, but choose Restart in Dos Mode. Then at the prompt, do these commands. The first will not appear to do anything if entered in correctly. The second will give a blue screen with a yellow progress bar. Do not be alarmed if it seems to pause running its course.
scanreg /opt
scanreg /fix
If this appears to be the same thing that is running whenever it starts up, look in your C:\Autoexec.bat file to see if the second command is there. The Autoexec.Bat file is processed just before actual windows loading takes place.
