Backing up WIN 98 SE computer preparatory to installing XP

Just how much do I need to back up?

I'm embarassed asking this... at one time I was "The Guru" for my job and neighbors, but I've been relegated to the status of "Luser" fopr the past several years.

WIN98SE on 600MHZ noname box.

I've got 7.98GB on the "C" drive and nearly 18GB on the "D" drive and I'm confused as to how to go about adequately backing all this up prior to getting a new computer (using WIN XP Pro/SP3 ) so I can then get it all re-installed and operational on the new box. (I trust that was sufficiently confusing?)

The Program files and Windows folders comprise abut 5GB of the total on "C".

I'd planned on getting something like a Plextor 716UF external DVD recorder and putting it all on DVD, but I'm also confused as to how I'd allocate the files to the DVD storage available. The literature says you can use dual-layer DVD +R to achieve 8(+) GB per disc, but I wonder if I'd be better off using single layer and more discs? Is there such a thing as the old "file splitting" technology for DVD's and would it even be required here?

I guess basically I'm asking for a tutorial on doing this (is there one lying about you know of?) or some specific kicks in the head to get me on the right track.

Searched the site but didn't turn up anything specific to what I 'm asking above.

Hello Vince!

Am I right in understanding that you're buying a new computer and want to transfer the user data from the old Win98 computer?

Does the new WinXP computer have a motherboard with connectors for IDE devices?

Is there a free IDE connector?

If the answer to all three questions is YES, take the old hard disk out from the old computer and put it temporarily in the new computer. Transfer your files to the new hard disk and when done, move the old hard disk back.

Just burn ALL files/folder to DVD then put on new computer.... But WhY ?

Just remember that you cannot copy programs across - these must all be installed afresh on the new computer - no problem with your personal data.

Also be aware that some W98 programs may not run on XP, even in compatability mode.

We can't tell if you are planning on getting a new computer. Consider getting an external enclosure and putting the old HDD into that.

You can then find what data you want, copy that to the new HDD and delete the rest, then the old HDD will become backup storage space and you won't have to worry about burning.

If you plan on getting an external DVD, go to the manufacturer's website and check the System Requirements. A 600MHZ system may not be able to run it.
