[Operating system not found when starting PC]

Everytime i start my gateway it shows Operating system not found. I can't seem to get it to boot from cd , and the comp doesn't give me the option to do so either is there any way i can reset dos or disable the 3 1/2 inch floppy drive? I have continuously tried from the start up menu and it will not give the option to do so either. Some help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

When your computer is giving the message, Operating system not found, it cannot find anything to boot from, your hard drive or a floppy drive. It would not be a good idea to disable your floppy drive, as you are going to need it.
Try this.
http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Go to the above link, and download the OEM file that is for your version of 98, this is important. If you have the original 98, and use the file for 98SE with the following advice, windows may not run.
Put a floppy into the drive and run the downloaded file. It will create a boot floppy that you can use to possibly make your hard drive bootable.
Boot the computer with the floppy, choose 'without CDrom support'. When the A:\> prompt appears, do these commands pressing Enter at the end of each line.
sys a: c:
fdisk /mbr

The second command will appear to do nothing when done properly.
Take out floppy and reboot computer.
