Thank you for recommending AVAST.com; it found 6 viruses and several trojans. Been using AVG Free which quits support of 98 in August 2008, but has obviously already stopped that support. AVAST is great for a freebie, scans slow and deep, with recommendations when it does find something. Updates and scans by itself and works fine with the Zone Alarm free version, which is needed for a firewall.

antivir was quite good for win 98 until they updated the program a year ago or so
Will the trend housecall online scan work for windows 98 - not sure

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    says it does
    window 98
    133 mhz pentium required

You can get older versions of programs including some antivirus programs at
    www.oldversion.com
    do not know about updates
You may be able to update the programs manually with current or newer defs
Make sure that you run spyware scans as well
that is the biggest problem not antivirus
the older adaware works not the latest
You can update the defs file manually
I am fairly sure that spybot still works on windows 98
Wonder at what point xp will no longer be supported

...you're right about the spyware...and spybot is still supporting 98. Also would like to add after seeing other 98 users mention Firefox as a successful browser, that this is totally true. Way better than Internet Explorer, smooth running and very informative, would highly recommend it for fixing bugs, download problems, site loading problems, you name it. Keep sharing the help, we all need it. 98 is a challenge, but a rewarding one.
