I'm running win98se and recently began experiencing explorer errors. These mainly occur when opening or closing folders, files or applications or right clciking on something.
It varies !
I can go for a while with no errors then doing exactly the same thing can get errors or conversely can start off a fresh sesssion with errors and then experience no errors.
Here's the last 3 examples but mainly they occur in module unknown rather than kernel32 [kernel32 errors are seldom]
As well as explorer errors I get internet explorer errors whilst in wndows even if int ex is not even open - again these are secondary to explorer errors + they do not occur whilst browsing

This last one
followed by "An error has ocurred in internet explorer"
no details

I've searched around the web for solutions with no resolution inc
deleting pwl files and rebooting
renaming applog2
repairing int explorer [in fact I reinstalled it completely - v 6.0 with sp1]
defrag
registry cleanup
All the 3rd party softs currently on the system are old favourites with no previous errors or conflicts tho' I wouldn't rule out a fleeeting installation of something which I tried and uninstalled because I didn't like it, but I couldn't say exactly what as I get phases of trying out numerous appplications and it is over a month since this came on.
Thanks

Thankyou for the useful link Arie.
They mention ShelExView which operates on a very useful priciple but it only displays approx half of my 3rd party applications shell extensions, can you point me to a more comprehensive application for disabling selective items?
Re step 2
I forgot to mention that I have already scanned several times with hijackthis - several different ad/spyware and anti av/trojan scanners, and at housecall - all clean.
No errors at all this afternoon despite trying countless manoeuvres to summon one
Which shell extension it is, I don't know as yet.
I've deleted a bunch in Regsupreme which provides a more detailed shell extension list albeit without the very handy disable/enable option. However I can progressively restore the backups later.
can you point me to a more comprehensive application for disabling selective items?
No, I don't know any. If I have a user system with problems, I just disable all 3rd party extensions & start re-enabling them one-by one until I find the culprit.
I didn't find one either Arie with a disable/enable option but regsupreme or an old jv16 powertools I have produces a more inclusive list of shell extensions.
