Exclamation Windows 98se [a lot of the updates have failed]

I have been having a lot of problems with iexplorer hanging up, I have repaired and repaired with no help doing that. So I checked my updates in Windows history update , I see a lot of the updates have failed. Could this cause some of my problems and if so is it advisable to reinstall the critical updates that have failed? I am running Windows 98 SE. Thanks in advance for anyone who can advise me.

Hello emgrene,
welcome to Windows BBS ... ... !

I edited your thread title to describe your question. In the future, use a more meaningful subject according to Posting Rule #3.

To your question:

If updates to Internet Explorer have failed it may well be the reason. Under all circumstances do I think it would be a good idea to attempt a reinstallation.

If you run Windows Update, does it tell you that any updates are needed?

Some anti-virus programs will cause problems while you are trying to download and install Windows Updates. They usually suggest that you disable your anti-virus program while downloading and installing the updates. Even some firewalls can cause these problems also. Make sure you place the URL for Windows Update in Trusted Sites in Internet Options. I have found that installing IE6 first helps with installing the other updates.

Exclamation Windows 98se [a lot of the updates have failed]

Thanks for your replies,
When I went into the windows update there was not any new updates but I checked the " View installation History "and their are 4 or 5 critical updates that have failed plus a total of 43 that failed, all in August of 05. This below is what it said when I viewed them. I checked some of the # on the updates and they were not in my computer as installed.
Would you suggest I re-install windows or the up-dates ? am not sure what to do because I continually have iexplorer freeze and won't respond until I click end task then it works ok for a while. I probably didn't close out of my anti virus when I installed them either. What is your advice for me to do?

Installation History
Keep track of what you've installed from Windows Update. To sort by status, date, description, or source, click the column headers.

Note The items listed on this page reflect only the actions you've performed on Windows Update. If you have subsequently restored your computer, or reinstalled or uninstalled programs, some items listed here might no longer be installed on your computer.

If you don't worry about formatting and reinstalling Win98SE go ahead. Once you have reinstalled it proceed with installing your motherboard, graphics and modem/Ethernet drivers. Then install Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 then go to Windows Update and download all of the updates you need. After this is done boot into Safe Mode and run ScanDisk and Defrag. When you finish with this install your anti-virus program then the rest of your programs.
