I recently reinstalled windows 98 on my computer. I used a startup disk, and used "fdisk" to create a partition and then "format" to format the partition. Everything ran smoothly during the installation of operating system, however, when i try to install some simple programs that i have used on this computer before, such as Limewire, i get an error saying, "a required .DLL file, USERENV.DLL, was not found. i am very curious about this because i have run this setup file on my computer before i did the windows reinstall and it worked fine. seems like something different happened when i did the reinstall this time. I tried doing another reinstall and i get the same thing with limewire. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help.

Limewire is considered malware/adware! P2P comes with many considerations and security risks! I felt you should be made aware of these and be forewarned. You should make it a point to study-up on the program and consider all the negative aspects of using it. If you must use it, make note and take heed of of any tips found on how to use it in the safest manner you possibly can. That being said and not being judgemental on ones personal "file sharing" software choice and preference, please read on.
Have you updated win98 and components such as IE/OE, scripting, Directx...etc... once again? All the update to-dos should/must be done before one attempts installing other things on the comp. Original installs have many bugs that updating will take care of. The software install problems you may not have had, previous to your new clean slate install, may be due to the fact that you were installing and using these on an updated win98.
Sounds like version conflicts or calls being made to files that are not the versions expected. They can not handle the calls or commands. This is just a guess on my part and is offered only until someone enters your post who is familiar with limewire fussiness. You may wish to read through some of these Google topics while you wait. They may offer something you have not considered.
Many P2P sites are shutting down or are going to block downloads of copyrighted material to satisfy injunctions. To me it is about time. As was stated you need to get all updates for Win98SE plus don't forget to update Java and disable Microsoft VM. If you insist on using P2P don't forget to download and use anti-spyware/anti-virus programs due to all of the malware entwined within these sites.
