Restored PC and got problems

Restored my HP 8543c last nite and now I got problems. I have restored it in the past with no problems at all. Anyway, when I turned it on and it got ready to run windows for the first time, it came up with the install for the modem (a riptide) and says windows has found new hardware and is installing software, then reboots. It just keeps doing this. I cant seem to stop it. And I cant seem to turn the PC off either. If I hold down the shutdown button, it just keeps rebooting. I have the modem drivers on a rewritable cd so if I can get it to stop trying to install them itself, I can do it manually. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi, When you say "restored", please tell us exactly what you did and why.
Also, (I am not familiar with this HP computer) what is the "shutdown button"
you refer to ?
What happens if you boot to Safe mode, remove the modem in
Control Panel/System and reboot ?
regards

The computer came with a restore disk, so that is what I used. I have fdisked and reformatted pcs before, but with this one, getting all the drivers together is a pain. Anyway, I wanted to clear it back to factory settings because I am giving it to my brother. As for the shutdown button, since I cant get to start/shut down....I was trying the on/off button. As for booting so safe mode, that is an idea, I will try it and get back to you. Thanks
