It must be old age, or I'm just not very good in the memory department here lately. But I seem to vaguely remember (I think) that some one discribed how to edit the lines in the msconfig window, in other words, how do you remove the old unused lines in msconfig window? Would hope that one of you, might remember.

There are several ways to do this, everyone has their own technique.
Backup your registry before doing this. Just in case. Better safe than sorry.
I use the Start>Find>Files and Folders option. Find the files you want to edit, config.sys, autoexec.bat, system.ini, or win.ini, and after it is found just doubleclick on it and open with notepad.
The reason I use this option is because I can't always remember where all the files are located so since I have to find them....might as well open them there.
After you make your changes make sure to save it, then restart your computer.
I can see your point but an easier way is to run sysedit and get the lot up. However, before making any changes it may be expedient to run msconfig first and create a global backup via the General tab. The backups will be placed in the original files' respective directories with the extension pss [PreSetS].

Thanks for the input. Your suggestion removed 2/3 of the old listings. But still have more to remove, can't seem to find them in the registry. Used "search" quite extensively, no results. This is a win98se system. Do you have any more idea's?

Note: Just finished following the info in the other post of "MSconfig", suggested using "Startup Control" it worked just fine. Thanks for all the help!

we are talking about startups that were not uninstalled along with the program correct, ? that still show in msconfig ?
I'm on win ME ,so I no nothing of sysedit,, me has a cleanup tab on the startups page of msconfig,whether things are checked or not if they point nowhere they get removed.
and can edit sys ini and win ini. from the msconfig utility
SpyBot S&D has a startup panel, though until the next version 1.3 I think it might not show every item.don't know because I'm using 1.3 beta four,can edit ,delete and disable startups.
Los of folks here recommend RegistryProt,,(free) its old but still a great idea,, I suppose this is what your looking for.

Look in this folder for some of the disabled (unchecked) items in msconfig.
If you see the ones you're looking for delete them
in the right pane and once you reboot they should be gone...
Windows\start menu\programs\disabled startup items
Been following this along with my own thread. Didn't realize anyone else would find the old problem of 'startup' so annoying.
Took me over 20 yrs. to do anything thorough about it. Thanks again and good luck to Houston.
