Registry Editing

Just tried to get to the Registry but received the following message: "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator"
1) How can I correct this?
2) What is the procedure for eliminating a startup item from that group using Regedit.

Looks like some security features have been adopted, such as System Policy Editor (poledit.exe).

That's a likely possibility.

Start\Run type in Msconfig, and press Enter, click on Startup tab. This will not get you into Regedit.

I'm trying to get rid of a start up item. Completely remove it from the startup list. I know that you go to Regedit to do that, but right now I can't get to use Regedit because of the probl;em I listed above.

If indeed poledit was utilized, all you can do is contact the system administrator regarding the startup change.

The administrator disabled access to the regedit, to eliminate unauthorized use, thus protecting the computer system.

Stay out of the Registry

Do as mark suggests or download StartUp Control Panel and disable the startup item through that applet.

Hi Larry,

I know you've had some bad problems with virus's lately and while you have stated that the problem was fixed [using your own description] quote;"by deleting a couple of files", are you sure you are clean?

What virus program do you use?

Your past posts where less than specific on what your whole problem was and the method[s] you used to clear them up.

Rule of thumb is virus scan, when you think your 100% clean, virus scan again and when you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that your clean, wait a day or two and scan again.

Use both a regular virus program and one that is specialized in Trojan detection and removal. Cleaning these out can be real tricky and if not done very carefully will rebound on ya'.

Are you the sole user of your computer? Wouldn't you know if poledit was used for a policy restriction [or some other security, or tweaker program that had policy settings]? Are you the administrator?

Sounded like you were all over your computer previously. In the files and in the registry. What's changed?

Hi Again,
My computer is free of virus's since I had it in to a techician and now have Symantic removing threats etc..
The virus vkras remains on my Startup List although it is unchecked.
To remove this item from the list completely, I believe that you have to go to Registry, but that is denied me because it "has been disabled by your administrator".
This may have occured when I was told in an earlier post how to remove DLLREG, which was causing problems. I did it by going to Run>WIN.ini and removing the reference to DLLREG
I guess my main concern now is remove the problem with the ADMINISTRATOR.
Any help on these matters would be appreciated.

opheim1--You say you just had a tech work on your PC. Perhaps he set up Administrator as on "user"?/ If so, here is a post that might help

Tried Welshjim's suggested three sites, but :
1) Wouldn't download.
2) Couldn't find a solution or process to correct Administrator problem.
3) Choose not to subscribe to OC magazine.

Still looking for a way to make the Registry available.

Try running this vbs script to get you out of the fix. The link describes what this script does and includes the download [of course]. Tried/tested it on my system and it works like a champ. One click you can't use regedit. Another click and you can.

If this doesn't work there's another trick up my sleeve but try this first:

opheim1--Sorry that first link I suggested does not work. It works for me and here is the pertinent part of what it suggests
"You could try installing this shareware application called Protectz.

Once you've installed it, start it up, and click on the "Additionals" button at the top of the screen. This should bring up another window with two rows of check-boxes. The last box, on the right-hand side, will say "Disable registry editing". This box will be checked on your system, so just remove the checkmark, save, and close out of the program.

You should now be able to run your Registry Editor."
Never used it myself. And, of course if goddez1's suggestion works, you won't need this.
