59 secs. before computer shuts off

My computer will tell me periodically - actually quite often that I have 59 seconds before my computer shuts off.

As per usual...THANKS in advance.

Need a bit more information.....

What OS? (edit Oops forgot this is the WIN98 section)

Does this happen while you're working in a program or is the computer idle?

Answers to those two is a good start, probably have more questions later.

Apparently while computer in use. I use "apparently" because the question/issue/problem isn't mine, but that of a computer-illiterate friend, living in another part of the country. She uses her pewter for 2 things: email & surfing, so I must assume she is doing what she's always done: boot the booger and check email.

Thanks

mbcannon2--I think the 59 second shutoff message is part of the Blaster worm. The worm only affects certain Windows operating systems (like NT and XP). In any event, your friend should run an antivirus scan with latest virus definitions.

Thank you!

She'll have to hire a computer person in her neighborhood.

Are you sure? According to MS Win 98FE/SE is not affected by Blaster Worm.

Thanks for your efforts, folks. I'm guessing the problem is her Power Management settings.

PeteC--Of course you are correct. I overlooked that this thread is posted in the Win98 Forum.
mbcannon2-- Power Management?? I guess it could be, but I have never gotten a warning. I am sure you can tell her how to access/change those settings. (Control Panel|Power Management. Don't forget to click Apply|OK after changes are made.)
Still would not hurt to run scans with antivirus and a spyware detector.

Thanks again folks! Unfortunately, the distressed damsel in question lives some 400 miles from us. I don't have the time to help her via email. Just thought maybe I could grab a quick, easy answer from you fine people.

She will have to hire someone.
