my friend bought himself a new pc athlon 1800 xp with 256 ddr ram and i installed win 98 the probs that have surfaced are as follows...

cd-rom occasionally continually searching (spinning fast) when trying to open files on cd.

on install of progs system hangs for ages, this started when i was installing drivers after win 98 install.

dvd wont play dvd's i downloaded and installed divx for latest codecs, and when i try to open divx i get an hour glass for 5 10 secs then hourglass stops but divx wont run? i have even re installed divx no joy, one time after attempting to do so for 4 try's i then tried to open a word doc, failing to even open that, i then hit ctrl, alt, del only to find 4 attempts for divx not responding.

and to eject dvd i have to go control panel dvd drive right click eject... the button on dvd drive dont alway's work.

i have setup pc as network server and left windows to set preferred ram settings.

so basically... how do i get dvd to play, and windows to keep up with user :)

If you are referring to the original Win98 then it may well not have the proper support for that CPU.

Or the proper drivers may not be available.

CDrom/DVD hardware conflict? Could check the master/slave settings.

Check the manufacturers' websites for any firmware updates.

I take it that the CDrom is new, some older ones needed drivers installed.

    No problems in Device Manager?
