1st - booted up and got "unknown hard error ", closed it and all works fine.

2nd - rebooted and no desktop icons showing (turned them back on) and
all icons show but, the taskbar shows the windows 8 logo, left-side, but it won't do
anything (L/R click does nothing. Right-side of the taskbar only shows 1 icon,
a (smaller) windows 8 logo that shows "get windows 10" when the mouse is
moved to it. None of the usual icons are present (volume, network, etc.

How do i get rid of the right-side logo (get windows 10) and get my taskbar
    back?

    thanks,
    clif

    Update:

A help or explanation of what they were doing, on screen, would have
helped a lot instead of causing a panic that you had ******* something
    up!

The "Get windows 10" is like making a reservation to get windows 10 at some future
date. When MS is ready, they will download it and notify you to install it.
The process has 4 steps to go through ( I didn't do it).

The changed taskbar is included in a windows 8 update (KB3035583) and it
installs a program named GWE or GWX (don't remember), look in the task
    manager.
Removing this update does not fix the icons or taskbar problems. I assume
that if you did the process then the normal icons/taskbar would return.......

My fix was to remove the update, end the program in task manager,
change my update options and do a system restore. I'll go to win10 after
its been fielded for a few months.

You can click that little "Show Hidden Icons" triangle and set GWX to Only show notifications or Hide icon and notifications.

Sorry to butt in Bill but that will not remove the icon and that is not a valid solution as the Windows 10 ad will come up every time the user logs into their profile.

To get rid of it you need to uninstall update KB3035583 as outlined here, How to remove the 'Get Windows 10' app from your PC and cancel your upgrade reservation.

Once the update is uninstalled, the computer needs to be rebooted and then after checking for updates via Windows Update again, you will need to hide the KB3035583 update so it doesn't install on your system again.

Evan, you got the right of it.

That little triangle was not showing on my taskbar.
